tablet or ipod touch suggestions for present

My other halfs birthday is coming up,

he likes to play with gadgets and i have been looking at getting him a tablet for his birthday, as neither of us are very technical i dont really know where to start .

He would use it for general surfing / mainly football related sites scores / the odd email

Did look on Amazon an found this
NATPC M009S 7 inch 2GB Google Android Tablet PC - Cheapest2.2 Android Tablet works with Flash 10.1 - WiFi , Touchscreen, Epad, Apad, Android Market, Youtube, Kindle and Facebook App

this is around £60 so not overly expensive, has anyone used this or can recommend anything similar ?

i have also been told to look at the ipod touch, thought this was just an mps player was surprised when i read what it can do !!!

neither of us have used any sort of smart phone or apps ( we both have old nokias that ring and text )

Can anyone suggest anything
many thanks

Any PC/Mac/tablet PC/smartphone/iPod touch would be able to do that, so it really comes down to how much do you want to spend?

A new version of the iPod Touch is expected to be released soon, which'll probably mean the current version will be reduced, if you can wait a bit (a month or so?).

My husband loves the ipod touch I bought him at Christmas. Also keeps the 8 year old quiet when we are out and about as we have put lots of app games on it. I bought a HTC smartphone for myself with android etc but find for accessing internet etc ipod touch better.

+1 for the ipod touch. yes Apple's products aren't cheap, but the design & ease of use really does make it worth the extra. I've got an Android phone as well, but the ipod wins hands down for screen clarity and general overall use.

    Thanks for the replys guys,

looks like i might investigate the ipod touch a little more.

Are they idiot friendly ? Neither of us are to technical minded.
Any other suggestions for a tablet to consider as well ?

    Many thanks

Don't worry, ipods are idiot friendly. As for tablets, any reviews I've read of the cheaper ones (i.e. under £100) aren't great). The good ones start at over £100. The Register recently tested some tablets - hopefully this'll help.

Like redped said they are very idiot friendly. No computer skills required at all.

They aren't cheap though. But you can get refurbished ones which cost a little less:

The 'Originally released September 2010' ones are the current model.

Have you looked into iPhone contracts? Depending on how much your OH spends per month on his mobile getting an iPhone on a contract might be comparable in price to an iPod Touch.

    Thank you .
I was looking at the 8gb wich is around the £170 or the 32g which is around 220 .

a previous poster has says there is a new model on the way, so i suppose if its close to the end of the month the prices of the 4th gen might fall .

As it is for a birthday i dont mind the spend, i would not be spending this sort of money on a whim.
As for his phone, its an old nokia 1616, which basily rings and texts nothing else and thats £5 a month .

The only thing I can add to this is information re the screen.

When the sales person throws into the sales pitch that the screen is resistive or capacitive, how will you react?

If it is resistive it requires pressure, as in stylus

If it is capacitive, it responds to slight touch and dragging of finger across the screen
