iPod Touch is very nice as it can be used at the bedside much more conveniently than an iPad.
iPad is a good armchair companion by contrast - though surprisingly heavy to hold for any time.

If you only want to spend £150 on a tablet, this one gets solid reviews

The only thing I can add to this is information re the screen.

When the sales person throws into the sales pitch that the screen is resistive or capacitive, how will you react?

If it is resistive it requires pressure, as in stylus

If it is capacitive, it responds to slight touch and dragging of finger across the screen

Thank you for that as i wouldnt have had the foggiest what he would have been going on about

As for his phone, its an old nokia 1616, which basily rings and texts nothing else and thats £5 a month .
OK I was thinking if he spends ~£30 a month on his phone he could probably get a very cheap or free iPhone on a contract, but not for £5 a month :)

If you're going for an iPod Touch, I'd recommend a 32GB one rather than an 8GB one, 8GB is nowhere near enough storage IMO - I've got apps that are 640MB (1GB is about 1000MB) in size (though most are far far smaller).

Do you have a computer? You will need access to one to update the iPod software, and back up the data on the iPod if you have anything important on there, but you don't need to do this very often really. If you don't have a computer, using a friend's or relative's computer twice a year or so to update the iPod would be fine.

The iPod Touch 5 is due to be released very soon - all the predictions I've seen say October at the latest. If it's not out in time for your OH's birthday, I'd seriously consider giving him an 'IOU an iPod Touch' note! The prices for the current one will probably fall when the new one is released.

Whatever iPod you decide to get, if possible, buy it direct from an Apple Store and get them to turn it on and activate it in the shop. This is so if it has any faults you can get it exchanged right away, and also it means it will work right out the box rather than having to be connected to a PC first.

When in the shop, get them to connect the iPod Touch to their wifi, and check for dead pixels. Both iPads I've bought had 1 dead pixel each, Apple exchanged them no problem though.
Use http://iphonedpt.awardspace.com/ (if you search Google for 'iPhone dead pixel test' this is the first result) to check for dead pixels, it's very simple to use, just follow the instructions on the site.

    Thank you for that,

I was going to buy from amazon,

but can see your point of getting them to check everything out. :T
Will see where my nearest store is.

I think the iou is a great idea, as i dont want to spend £225 on the 32 model, only for the price to drop when the latest ipod touch comes out.

i do have access to pc at home, runs xp
my friend also uses itunes for her basic ipod so i might inlist her for any set up that might need done or new account etc

The worst aspect of the ipod Touch is that it means having to deal with the itune store if you want apps. It also means having to perform software updates which invariably fail leaving the Touch totally fooked unless you are willing to spend several hours un!!!!!!! it or spend time at an Apple store.

Apart from those problems the Touch is a wonderful bit of kit - but don't go for the 8GB version, go for a 32GB version at least as it's impossible to add capacity to it.

He would use it for general surfing / mainly football related sites scores / the odd email

Suprised no one has mentioned the major flaw with ipod touches and thats the lack of flash.

So he may be surfing and certain sites wont load and if his footie score sites have highlight videos then they wont work either
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right

'major flaw'? I've never had a problem with the lack of flash, none of the websites I use rely on it.
Free flash games don't work of course, but I've got loads of games on my iPad, I don't want or need to play flash ones too. Apart from flash games, the only other thing I've noticed not working are videos on the BBC website, and there's a free BBC News app that has some (most? all?) of the videos on it.

Is it a problem having to use itune store for apps ? :(
Also with the software updates, do the cause problems ? :(

Installing apps from the App Store is an easy and reliable process in all my experience. If you are non-techy, buy one (Touch or iPad) and enjoy!

However if you are techy and want to use your Touch as a tool for, say diagnosing WiFi problems around the house, you're stuffed unless you jailbreak. Pity, I love my Touch but having discovered the walled garden limitations like this, and Apple's fairly determined efforts to prevent Jailbreaking, I would get an Android equivalent next time.
