how much does the value of a car increase with a new MOT

my mother recently passed away and i am one of the executors of her estate.

she has a car (53 reg plate) and the mot is due for renewal in Dec 2011

as there is no hurry to sell the car (although no-one in the family needs it), I am looking at how to maximise the value, so i am wondering at the different options

1st question
Is it worth getting a new 12 month MOT on the car, rather than try and sell it with only 3 months approx left on the current MOT?

also my mother had a blue invalidity badge, therefore the car is exempt from paying Road Tax on it, I have spoken to DVLA about how to pay for road tax.

2nd question is - would putting 6/12 months road tax on increase the value of the car also (or would it just help to sell it quicker)

3rd question - does anyone no of a website where i can get some idea of the current value of the car (need this to put on probate forms)

thanks rob

I don't think adding the road tax would add any value but it may make it easier to sell.
A full Mot is always better, but if it needed a lot of work you'd have to ask yourself is it worth spending that much.
I'd advertise it as , .......... reason for selling death of owner, then people know it's not 'cos of big problems with the car.

Just not having a car taxed when you go to buy it is a nuisance, no, or short MOT means you decimate the number of potential buyers. Get it in for an MOT and see how the land lies, a full MOT (even though its not due yet) and 6 months tax with the real reason for sale will have the phone ringing.
  • A car with no MOT is basically scrap or what someone is willing to pay for it. Many such as yours are bought by dealers to make a fast buck. The car cannot be driven on the road and will need trailering or transporting away. This is expensive and trouble for private buyers but dealers usually have their own facilities so it's easy for them. with an MOT but without tax, It can only be driven on the road using trade plates, again dealers have an advantage even though it is easy to tax the car at a post office with the buyers slip, many private buyers don't realise this. With any MOT and tax , you have increased the pool of buyers and made the car more valuable as it can be driven away immediately.
So, any amount of MOT and tax will be beneficial in a sale. Don't bother putting 12 months tax on it , put 6 on because the longer term won't make any difference.
You must change the taxation class on the car before advertising it as it can take several weeks for the DVLA to process and the only people usually willing to wait for this are again, dealers up for a good proffit.

Have a browse through the car guides in W.H. Smiths for an idea on price, bearing in mind, no MOT, no guide will be of any use.

    Hope that helps

To tax it you will need to insure it. Surely as its an 8 year old car the max value wont be that much different with a longer MOT. I would get shot of it asap nowwith 3months MOT.

an added problem is that the current insurance company have given me 30 days temp cover, which runs out in 2 weeks.

so i will probably have to either temp insurance or SORN it (and park on my front driveway - which will cheer up OH :( )

  • Sell it now, as it stands. It's not worth getting the MOT extended, or the tax renewed.

  • I would sell it asap with the 3 months MOT. However, I would get it taxed for 6 months.

  • If the car is registered as disabled, it would help if it was changed at DVLA before trying to sell it, see this post about someone having problems buying a car registered as disabled:

    Slight problem here

Looking at a V5C (Registration Document) Section 7 "Changes to current vehicle"

Clearly states that the tax class shown in Section 4 can only be changed when taxing. Please apply at your local DVLA.

IF OP taxes, local DVLA sends away the V5C it may take 4-6 weeks for replacement to arrive, may prove difficult to sell without V5C

Changing taxation class we do it frequently, never had a problem

  • The OP is in no hurry to sell so if they changed the taxation class first, it's one less thing to worry about when selling.
