damn, that closed is quick off the mark

threebabes, yes you will still need an extra 1 GB of RAM even after the cleanup to run vista properly. Fit the new 1 GB in the empty slot to give you 2GB overall.
...and keep following closed's advice on the cleanup

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Yous all have been so helpful, thank you very much.
The worse thing is Ive got to do it all again with my other daughters acer laptop (they are both the same) arghhhhh.0 -
If I want to update windows to Windows 7, will it run ok? Word doesnt currently work on the laptop.0
-
a cleanup will have far more impact than more ram
Why do you want W7? yes it will run if you really want to buy it.
W7 doesn't come with word or office.
If you need office you may be able to get it cheap as your daughter is at school, or you could use openoffice instead which is free
I suggest going into erecovery and making a reinstallation disc if your machine didn't come with one - also if you need no data on these machines, using erecovery to do a vista factory restore (ie reinstall) is the fastest way of making it run fast again (but will wipe all music/data/pics/bookmarks etc)!!

Thanks
1GB RAM more is fine. Don't neglect to buy two modules, as you need another for the other laptop.
Then decide on the Factory Restore or cleanup.
If there is no important data on the laptop or you have already taken a copy, Factory Restore is quickest. Then just download and install all the Windows Updates. You should have Vista SP2 and Internet Explorer 9 to be up to date.
That together with the extra RAM, will ensure that the laptop performs better than it did when new.
Then tap closed on the shoulder and get him to assist you with a further 'trim down' to speed things up even further.0 -

Hi, no nothing important on either of them. Thanks for your reply.0 -
Just open ACER eRecovery Management, choose Restore and then Restore System to Factory Default.
Once that is done(should take no more than forty-five minutes in all), connect to the Internet but don't open any browsers, go to Windows Update( Start > All Programs > Windows Update > Check For Updates.
Each time you install the updates and re-boot, return to Windows Update and check again. You will have to repeat this many times, as there will be lots of updates. In the end you will have Vista Home Basic SP2 and Internet Explorer 9.
You will probably have all of Windows Live Essentials 2011 clogging up your PC(Bing ToolBar etc), but we can un-install and/or disable any unwanted applications at the end of the process. This is an important part, so don't neglect to resurrect this thread at that stage.
Don't forget to order the RAM.
The manual will have the fitting instructions. If you are not sure, again return here and ask before proceeding. It's very easy. 0 -
that model was supplied with vista, so adding at least an extra half-gig is a must, even better an extra full gig.
It's DDR2 ram up to 667MHz, 2 slots on mobo. Run the crucial scanner to find out how your system is configured (1x1GB in one slot, or 2x512MB in each slot).

This will then tell you what you need to get, either one or two of these:-
http://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SMEM12DCH bargain at £7 each delivered, with 12-month warranty. Fitting it will only take a few minutes to do it yourself
AND follow the sticky as advised.
Thank you, ordered the RAM, and it arrived this morning.
Hubby has managed to put the RAM in the two laptops and saved us £100.0 -
