Thank you all for your help.

Ive ran the memory program. Current Memory is 1GB Max Memory 4GB, Total Memory Slots 2, Available Memory Slot 1
Each Memory slot cane hold DDR2 PC2 6400, DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum 2GB per slot.

Will get my husband to go through the sticky on the top.

Also hoping to update the laptop to Windows 7, so the laptop is compatible with the schools software, would the 1GB extra be enough to run that?

scan and save log, then copy and paste into thread.

ie : scan, click save log, save to a file, which will open in notepad

control A - to select all
control C - to copy to clipboard
then
control V to paste into thread.

(if you have a problem running hijackthis (For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file error etc) on vista/W7, right click on hijackthis.exe and run as admin, if that doesn't work, try again holding down the shift key and run as admin)

uninstall pando media booster unless you need it

install avast free. register it

Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe

Click the java icon in control panel, updates, untick check for updates

install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download)

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

run windows update, your service pack and browser IE is out of date

install malwarebytes (decline the 14 day trial during installation), update, and do a full scan, fix anything found before closing

start, run, services.msc, disable these services UNLESS you use them. (make a note of any services you disable,if you have any problems related to these services subsequently, simply re-enable them)

it's good you've got a memory slot free - one of the sticks linked to above will do you, £7 to sort your ram out is nowt

vista is out of date, should be up to service pack 2. And AVG will cause considerable slowdown on an under-powered system. Uninstall it, run the avg removal tool
