Mobile home on own land???

I kmow this is a bit of a funny question and I i'm not sure if its going to be posted in the right place but I was wondering....

I have a field which I own behing the house with some stables on(approx 5 acres)which has planning for equestrian use.

If we were totally struggling on the money front and sold the house but kept the field ( the deeds are seperate)...what is the likelihood that:

a) we would get planning for a mobile home for us to live in? (very low I imagine?) and...

b) what would happen if we just went ahead and plonked one down there because we could not afford to buy or rent anywhere else? Would the council prefer to pay to house us or give us planning?

Dunno if it makes a difference but...Next door lives a family who moved onto a bit of the next field 15 years ago in a caravan (they were travellers) and have now got planning etc and live in a mobile and have some outbuildings etc.Its all legit. How can we do it too? Is it totally illegal? Will we get thrown off the land and have to go to prison?

many thanks...

Sounds like a great idea. Happens all the time in the USA.

It all depends on the area and planning policy. It's probably very difficult. I don't think they will look at any kind of financial justification though.

Does it have it's own access road. Would be the only difficulty I can think of.

I wouldn't think so AL - A few stables dosen't make it an Equine Centre.

I've looked at some stables (5) with afew acres of land. It's got road frontage which is great, because I intend to stick a Caravan on it during the Summer months - as I'll be based abroad for the rest of the Year! I'm not going bother with planing permission as I'm hoping by the time the Authorities catch up it'll be back in storage only to repeat the process the following year! Is this being naughty?

They may view it rather differently if you sell a house next to the property though and then try to argue for a mobile home on security grounds.

Extremely unlikely. There is a National planning policy against development for residential use on agricultural land (and that includes equestrian land).

Someone would probably report the appearance of a mobile home to the enforcement team at the Planning department. They would (eventually) issue you with an enforcement notice requiring you to remove the caravan, if you did not do so voluntarily - they would try to persuade you simply to move it, first.

If you require housing assistance, you have to go through the separate usual channels. Planning departments have no authority to grant housing of any description.

The only reason it's "legit" (if indeed it is) is because they have been on the land unchallenged for more than 12 years. After 12 years, if the planning department has taken no enforcement measures, then they are barred from ever doing so. Therefore, the use of the land has changed from one which is agricultural to one which is residential, simply because it was used for residential purposes for 12 (consecutive) years, without any enforcement action being taken.

It may not be "legit" residential land. It could be that the owner has offered the land to the Council to use as a Travellers' transit site - somewhere for them to stay, purely as travellers, without changing the land to one that allows permanent residential dwellings.

If you need housing assistance, you should contact the housing department - unless you fancy trying to avoid enforcement action for placing a mobile home on agricultural land. And if you do, you'll need to be successful for 12 years.

Round here, the planning department will know within hours if a caravan turns up on (a) the roadside or (b) a field (as they do, from time to time - and they are quickly moved on!)

If this is your own land, I don't understand why you couldn't park your mobile home where you want. They have to be parked somewhere. I've seen them parked in driveways for ever.

Trust me. You definately need planning permission.

I believe you. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to me since it is his land and a mobile is simply a large people carrier vehicle. I can build an indoor swimming pool in my back yard as long as it meets the height and width restictions or an outdoor office/summer house. But you're right, I may have to inform the council that I'm actually doing it. But it is definitely allowed.
