Well, I suppose I'm making a profit but I'm just selling odds and ends to clear out some space, I haven't got a set area as such yet although I have one in mind

I think I am, making a few quid. I bought loads of lingerie in the sales at £1 a piece. I sold some of it for £9.50 so far.... Some not quite so much, but At £1 a piece for quality stuff, I should make a few quid

That seems a bit harsh? Has Snooze Control said something to annoy you? Aren't people entitled to their own opinions, even the ones you might not agree with?

Na he's not annoyed me but everyone seems to be having a row with this guy on one post or another at the mo so just thought I'd join in ....just me being friendly - I was a little pished last night and thats my idea of being friendly when I'm a little pished ;+)
btw I actually suspect he's someone that everyone used to argue with a while ago who's back under a new name (who I incidently quite liked).... but I'm probably wrong

    HI All,
Firstly I do apologise if this is not the correct forum to post in. Over the last couple of years I have sold a handful of items on Ebay and not made a large profit but without much effort I couldn't complain. However, It was wondering if anyone on the forums actually makes a decent income from selling on ebay? I am considering selling a few product types on ebay and scouting around for suppliers/wholesalers, so if anyone has any advice it would be appreciated.... oh and feel free to PM.

    Cheers

    Andy

Pop down to your local WHSmiths and see if they stock The Trader magazine - or have a look at http://www.thetrader.co.uk/

I've turned over nearly £2k a month for my first 2 months of full time selling and am on course to do £2,250 this month. Profit after tax is about 25% of that.

I have found that wholesalers are pretty easy to get into, Some are notoriously difficult to get trade accounts with, such as IT equipment, but giftware, and houshold goods are a doddle to get into, most have a minimum purchase to put off the public, but usually anywhere between £75-£250. Look for industry trade fairs, my fave is the Spring Fair and Autumn Fair at the NEC, wear comfy shoes as its huge, plenty of suppliers there. Some will ignore you as being small fry, just never mention ebay, usually I say I have a shop, they rarely check, and profits are available if you do the research and put the effort.

I could earn a living if I packed in my job but I dont know if I could earn more than I am now. Plus ebay isnt a career and theres no financial stability.

I started off importing and selling T-shirts, then guitars, and now something else.
  • Many thanks for the contributions and PMs. It all looks very interesting....
    Keep them coming...

I personally think its EXTREMELY difficult to make decent money on ebay unless you have a lot of experience and knowledge of products.

As I mentioned I used to sell t-shirts but several years on and due to ebay expanding theres no money to be made on them.

Where in the past I could auciton a t-shirt a week, sell it for £20 and offer second chance offers for £18, £15 etc, making about 35 quid having only paid £5 for them...... now you have a million powersellers listing pages and pages of them with BINs of £4.99. Theres no point anymore.

Theres so much competition on ebay now.

I sold a couple of toasters last xmas at double what I paid at £80, making £40 on each. Now theres a seller who lists them at £35. It was the "I love you" toasters.

Remember Flat eric? The teddy on the Levi advert. In the past you could sell them for 30 quid easy. Some sold well in the run up to xmas but otherwise all year round they go for a fiver. You can get them in charity shops for pennies.

It depends on how much storage is available to you, and how badly you need money at all times...
For example in the house of fraser sale they had loads of designer swinwear for 50p - some were £38 originally (all tagged ). I brought some in sizes of y friends and myself, and i plan on selling them on ebay in the summer and hopefully sell them for £10+ a piece, any i do not sell i'll either keep or give to friends or charity shop
