My son had his pencil case go missing the first week of school!! Everything was named, never appeared.
When my son started secondary school, they were able to get a school coat with their name on! Never went missing!!
Countless jumpers lost at Primary school!
Worst thing was when he had a swimming lesson, went to get dressed and his trousers had gone!!!! He had to walk home with a towel round him!! ( after school lesson)

How odd that this thread has been resurrected now. The other week I was reading in our local paper about the mother of the girl I mentioned who stole my daughters lunch box. Up in court for running a shoplifting ring, getting the daughter (now 14) and her friends to sell the stolen stuff at school... Poor kid, no wonder she had no respect for other peoples belongings!

    Not surprising is it?
Years ago I worked in a shop and watched a Mum and Dad put stolen stock into their nursery age children's rucksacks. We had them on CCTV and he was jailed (she got off with some order or another).

Saw them again a few years later in Pizza Hut trying to do a runner, the kids seemed to know the drill, coat on, when Dad goes out for a smoke, run.

I'm guessing those kids are about 15 now, never stood a chance.

It's spooked me out a bit that this old thread's reappeared as I'm the OP and can you believe, about a week ago I'm rummaging through lost property for my daughter's cardigan and lo and behold there's my son's missing coat!!

It was filthy and obviously been well worn for the last couple of years. I went to tell the office that it was originally mine but the name had been crossed out/worn off in various places. The school secretary just laughed nervously.

I was tempted to see who claimed the coat but what could I have done? I'd never create a scene in front of a child and how could I ever really prove it was theft.

I've obviously mellowed towards the adult who turned a blind eye to her son coming home in the wrong coat (we've all gone through tough times) but still really cross about the complete lack of interest by the school.

If possible write her name on the name tag as usual. But also write it somewhere inconspicous - such as the inside of the sleeve. So if some little toad steals it and little toads delightful mother cuts your name tag out you can still prove it is yours if need be.

I bought my son a jacket where you could zip out the sleeves and wear it as a gilet type jacket. Just in case, I named the inside of the sleeves. He came out of school one day without the jacket, it had gone 'missing'. I was fuming . A few days later I saw another child wearing the same jacket. I went up to the Mum and said my son's jacket which was the same had gone missing and could I check the jacket. She let me and low and behold the name tag at the collar had been removed but not the tags in the sleeves. I was shocked and gave her what for - obvious theft. I said I wouldn't take it any further if she didn't steal again.

I think I've suddenly realised why my parents used to send me to school in the ugliest, barf coloured coats ever. :o

This thread reminded me of my gorgeous dark red Miss Selfridge coat that was stolen by someone at school. It was more than 30 years ago, but I'm still angry at whoever it was who stole it. I had begged my mum for ages to buy it for me because it cost more than she really wanted to spend on a coat for me (we never had much money) and I only owned it for about two weeks before it was stolen. The person who took it never wore it to school so I never got a chance to get it back. I ended up with a horrible grey coat bought in a sale because that was all my mum could afford after spending too much on my lovely red coat :(
