Technically you're both supposed to tell your insurance as per post #3 however in practice if you settle privately then most people don't bother, meaning the accident officially never happened. If you both tell your insurance then both your premiums will rise for the next 5 years.

Look at this from her perspective, you say she was parked but she was still in the car so are you sure she wasn't just stopped, perhaps to let somebody else out of a space. Through no fault of her own her car has been damaged and she is looking at 5 years of increased insurance premiums. Depending on how fussy she is about the car's appearance I'd want it fixing too.

I'm the same, well not if someone hit my Mondeo, but if someone scraped the Cefiro I'd at least want the clear coat re-doing. I spent a lot of money getting that all nicely sanded down and polished to an even thickness with no scratches or swirl marks left anywhere in it, and a bump like you describe would ruin that.

on friday i was in a bay in the carpark of the train station i began to reverse i looked over my left shoulder and began to pull out, very slowly about 2mph there was a black bmw z4 just parked behind me to the right of my car, not in bay i went back into this car,

If everyone reverse parked, this !!!! would never happen.

It's more risky to reverse out of a space than to reverse into one.

It is sometime necessary to park forwards though. e.g. if you need to access the boot afterwards.

Bonus points for when the idiots who design supermarket car parks put a bollard behind every space so that you can't open the boot of a hatchback and make the spaces the exact same length as a Mondeo.

Spoken by someone who has never tried to get a shopping trolley between two parked cars, or a trolley full of timber, plasterboard and copper pipe.
It's more risky for the boot of your car if I back up to it, believe me.

    Hi...

Im sorry if this is the wrong place to post...

See those three bits of reflective glass on your car - one on each side and one in the middle of the windscreen? They're called mirrors and will show you what is behind you....

To be fair you simply cannot reverse into a static object.... and blame the object for the collision.

The OP does acknowledge fault though so credit where it is due.

You can't blame the BMW driver for wanting her car back in the same condition it was in prior to the incident as opposed to a "you can barely see it" condition.

Because reversing a HGV is totally as easy as reversing a car and HGV mirrors don't have massive blind spots or anything like that.
  • look at my orginal post

i accept this is my fault

my question is if i claim through insurance will i have to pay my excess of £250? and is this lady actually doing me a favour by getting it done by a friend of hers... any help would be massively appreciated, i only passed my test in december, my insurance is up in december...i have no years no claims anyway???

I know it was my fault so for all your comments about mirrors and reverse parking, thanks, thats a HUGE help!

my actual question was, is she helping me by not claiming on her insurance?

    again...refer to my second post

i understand and accept responsiblity and appriciate if i was in the same position.

I completely understand the bmw drivers point of view, she would of course expect this to be fixed to its orginal condition, anyone one....again that was not my question. My question was to go through my insurance or to settle privately to save both out insurances going up.

i thought people were here to help and advise not to critise...

thanks to those who have helped.

I think you've had all the information now and it's up to you to make your mind up.

A one year's no claims bonus HALVED my insurance when I was younger... that first year's NCB is important. Ending up with 0 NCB and a Fault Accident is going to cost you big time, especially if you're a bloke. I wouldn't necessarily say she's doing you a favour by getting her friend to sort the car out (she may even be pocketing the money to use for new shoes and handbag) but if it avoids a Fault Accident and loss of NCB, I'd say it's in your best interest to go along with it. The decision is yours though.

You will not have to pay the Excess for a third party claim, you only pay that if you claim from your own policy. That's the least of your worries though really.
