iPhone roaming charges - please help.

What on earth are you rambling about?
You admitted you are just Apple bashing so there is little point having a reasonable debate with you, who does that, combined with selective quoting and mis-representing what has already been said - and rambling about unrelated subjects.
No point responding to you anymore, any credibility in what you saying has long gone.0 -
Well pardon me robt, you clearly are so right. Apple bashing is of course a serious crime and one can't go looking into the why's and wherefore's of our current predicament for excuses now can we? Afterall, it is what it is, ain't that the truth? I wish I had your wonderful ability to see things so clearly for what they are.
Please do also pardon me for breathing.
... but actually, no I didn't say I was just Apple bashing ... there was more ... but your delicate stomach couldn't take it.0 -

The iPhone has data turned off by default. If you turn it on it warns you that data roaming can be very expensive. Please tell me how this is an iPhone problem and not a user problem.
Sounds like you are just iPhone bashing to me.
I am not Iphone bashing, I absolutely love my Iphone, but saying
"data roaming MAY be expensive" for normal user who has no idea about the background running means nothing.
Which is the main argument.
I also know that calls from abroad MAY be expensive, but they are only charged if you actually pick up the phone, dial number or answer a ring and speak with someone.
So data roaming may not just be expensive, it is running ALL THE TIME and therefore IT WILL be expensive. Which is the point that many ordinary non tech folk escapes, because we are not aware of it that much.
And I don't think that is much of an Iphone problem to be fair, I think it is cruelty of the networks with a bit of Apple ignorance mixed in (which is just full of geeks I reckon so they wouldn't have thought that regular user might not know this stuff).0 -

Not just Iphones, of course, but Androids and most smartphones. There have been a lot of roaming charges threads and I remember being flamed for saying that smartphone users should not be allowed to buy one till they have read the manual and had a driving test!
Well - a bit OTT perhaps, but they should certainly be banned from starting bleating threads that blame everyone except themselves if they haven't bothered to learn the basics about why smartphones are called smart! At some point people need to take responsibility for their inaction.0 -

Sorry, but I am reading it right now, part "using Iphone abroad" and there is nowhere said that the data are being streamed even if I am not using it. It is nowhere spelled out. And I need it spelling out, because I am not a data specialist, not a computer specialist and not a tech person.
It actually spells out everything you won't be able to use when data switched off, and as I am not using it when I am abroad I didn't realise it will stream still! It also spells out that IF YOU USE these features roaming data charges may apply.
By the way passing a driving test does not mean that you know how to repair an engine or how fuel injections gets blocked. Or even how to recognise something is wrong. Or that there are different rules in central Europe.
Also I don't think smart phones are called "smart" because they use internet data all the time... Somehow that sense is escaping me still!! I would have thought that they are smart because all the functions they have, getting closer and closer to my computer which performs all these things without being connected to internet all the time..
Sorry, but I am not arguing over this any more, it is very easy for tech person to get frustrated with non tech person over something that is blatantly obvious to them and just because it is obvious to you doesn't mean it will suddenly change my tech background because you wish for it!0 -
These weren't foreign roaming charges, these are going over in your own front room charges! And the contract set up in store at Tesco. Naive I know, in hindsight but I'd never come across recurring transfers before -all my other monthly payments are direct debits (with more reputable companies obviously!). I've brushed up on it now though and will be signing the petition!
As I said earlier this is a consumer rip off on a major scale but until someone with teeth gets in and sorts out these rip off telecom providers, they will carry on getting away with it. Where is the correlation between the monthly charge of £32.50 and the hundreds of pounds for going over for just 5 hours? Tesco Mobile can charge in those few hours more than my landline provider charges for phone, broadband and tv charges in a year. That is just immoral and plain greedy. Ordinary unwary people need protection from these vultures.0 -
No, passing a UK driving test does not mean that you 'know the rules in central Europe'. But if you drive in central Europe, you are expected to familiarise yourself with the local rules, and, should you break them, ignorance of them would not be a valid defence.
Seems a reasonable analogy to me?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Yes, and following your analogy I KNOW foreign data cost.
I just don't know I am using them!! It is the operating of the phone I don't understand, not that I don't know that in foreign country cost is different!
As well as I don't fully understand how computers work, beside vaguely knowing about 0101000 1100 10 10:-)))0 -

By the way I do think that now you are just winding me up for fun..
Because I cannot see how that is valid argument for not knowing how the operating system of the phone works..
From all the arguments given I just don't understand how you cannot see that it is not given that normal folk fully and truly understand the operating system of every item in their household!
I just think there should be higher awareness of the issue, as it costs you money.0
