mechanic charges!

  • The shops didn't sell the parts to you so you didn't pay the VAT on the original parts purchase. The only VAT you have paid is to the garage. VAT can only be charged to the person the goods or services are invoiced to, in this case to the garage.
Where the shop is, is irrelevant

Basically they have put a mark up on the parts, which seems reasonable if as you say you chose not to supply those parts yourself like you normally do. Lesson learned as you say.

As a service professional I do understand that asking someone to do something for me professionally usually has a cost implication. Many people (including some of my clients) seem to think that all services should not have a cost implication
  • £300 to change the timing belt and water pump seems reasonable to me.You can pay more than double that for some cars.
  • "...well I rung the shop the same afternoon once I receiced my bill from the mechanic and enquired about the prices.....the mechanic charged me £78.50 for the belt kit - the shop told me it would cost £73.50 . The shop also quoted me £30 for the water pump....the mechanic listed it on my bill as £39.80.

So you don't actully know this to be the case. I'd find out for sure, ring the parts place and ask them their price. You may even find there is a trade discount that you wouldn't have got.

In future be sure of you facts first.

Seems I could offer the same advice to you...... ;)

  • Seems some people have nothing better to do than preach at others so Im going to bow out of this thread now.

If people take the time to read the post correctly they will see that I have not once moaned about the labour charges OR the price of the parts required to fix my car....

My problem was that the VAT was (in my opinion) being paid twice so the only people benefiting are the government!

The VAT had already been added to the car parts by the car shop , which means that they are going to forward 20% of that on to the goverment and then the garage charged ME 20% of their price as well and he in turn is going to forward THAT onto the government so THAT was my gripe!

    thanks for the input anyhow.

Not £25 more than I thought , just £25 more than it would have if I had went into the shop and purchased the parts myself!

he's charged you £25 for collecting the parts on your behalf, how he's shown this on the invoice is irrelevant to you, it would still be £25 or £22.23 Plus VAT, were you so niave to think he would do it for nothing.

At the end of the day it's not paying VAT twice, he or his accountants will do a VAT return every 3 months, the amount he has to pay HMRC is based on his total sales and purchases, the bottom line (including VAT) figure from his sales and purchase invoices.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Unfortunately your opinion is wrong. Parts supplier charges A+VAT to garage, garage adds mark up x and charges you (A+x) + VAT.

    That is the correct treatment.

Maybe Im seeing this wrong or maybe Im just too annoyed at the situation to see things correctly but by my own assumption the first lot of VAT which I paid was paid to the shop who originally sold the timing belt kit , water pump and antifreeze. The mechanic has billed me £129 for these parts and Im assuming that this £129 included the VAT. Then , when the mechanic added the labour cost and the £129 together he then added 20% of this total to the bill again.

This is where Im saying that the Vat has been paid twice.

Maybe its just normal practice , I dont know. Usually when I use a garage I get just a "total" to pay...

Wrongly....it will be the net price plus their mark up. Their mark up may be equal to the VAT charged by the parts supplier but it is still their mark up on which they have rightly charged VAT.

No offence but you got your facts about the VAT wrong and people are trying to correct you

VAT registered businesses merely collect VAT on behalf of the government and pay it over at the end of each quarter usually. You have only paid one lot of VAT to the garage. What you have paid as others have indicated is a mark up on the parts potentially of whoch the garage will benefit by 5/6ths of the amount and the government by 1/6 of the total mark up you paid

OP you would really have a fright if you stopped to realise that the garage will have got a discount on the parts too!
