But you said the bill came to £25 more than you thought it should, based on that, someone having to down tools and pop out for parts and pay for them on your behalf, seems reasonable to me, whether the shop was practicaly next door is irrelevant.

Not £25 more than I thought , just £25 more than it would have if I had went into the shop and purchased the parts myself!

In reality when you think about it , VAT has been paid on the parts TWICE . Once when the shop is paid for the parts and then the mechanic has charged me 20% VAT on them again.

In future I will bring the parts with me!

ps by the way , no-one had to pay for the parts on my behalf there and then as the mechanic has an account with the parts shop and settles up at the end of each month (according to the mechanic).

So , when I arrived at the garage I was running late for work and so asked the mechanic to go to the parts shop which incidently is 2 shops down from the garage to get the parts for me which he said he had no problem with.
"Send someone round"? They hardly had to "send someone round" lol given that the parts shop is literally only 2 shops away :D

    ..

You got someone else to do something you didn't have time to do yourself but you don't want to pay them for doing it?

I think when you come asking for advice, it is a good idea to be a bit more polite.
I can see why they added such a premium on the bill now.

Why? Maybe you could point out to me where I have been impolite?

But they will if you actually take time to think about it they'll make 20% as the won't be rquired to pay the VAT twice.

Maybe Im seeing this wrong or maybe Im just too annoyed at the situation to see things correctly but by my own assumption the first lot of VAT which I paid was paid to the shop who originally sold the timing belt kit , water pump and antifreeze. The mechanic has billed me £129 for these parts and Im assuming that this £129 included the VAT. Then , when the mechanic added the labour cost and the £129 together he then added 20% of this total to the bill again.

This is where Im saying that the Vat has been paid twice.

Maybe its just normal practice , I dont know. Usually when I use a garage I get just a "total" to pay...

So you don't actully know this to be the case. I'd find out for sure, ring the parts place and ask them their price. You may even find there is a trade discount that you wouldn't have got.

In future be sure of you facts first.
