Personally I could ask for advise and no reply would bother me (good or bad), of course if met with a lot of negatives I would consider why.

With that I have an introverted mind and think through problems within myself so never really feel the need to ask for advise unless its on a technical basis.

  • I totally agree! It gets unbelievably childish in many threads, a simple question cannot be answered without 10 people having a massive debate on the subject. I think many people want their voice to be heard and their opinion to be agreed with, and when it's not, the claws come out. There is an abundance of self-righteous know it alls on this forum and it makes me sick when they start spouting venom and attacking people. I was always taught that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I think we all have encountered it, sometimes the replies are  and other times massively helpful and a way to see it from all sides, I have had posters on my threads that you can't actually believe they are pressing the submit button:eek: there is no way they would put anythingl like that if there was the slightest chance you could come face to face as they know that there is no way they could ever speak to their friends or families like that without getting a slap:rotfl:

Hm . . I see it from both sides. There are ALOT of people who post on MSE - Everyone is different and whilst yes, not everyone has a motive, but there are a few who do.

I'll admit, I've had a few spats on here - as im sure a lot of people have. I dont take things personally, but neither do i "rip into" them personally. Everyone will always have their own opinions, we dont always agree so there will ALWAYS be arguing on MSE - and if the arguing is done in a productive manner then it's great because people start to see things from another point of view and it might actually help. What people need to remember is everyone has baggage and things going off in their life and they cant leave it at the "door" and come into MSE.

P.S - Sometimes the reason people use past posts isnt because they are looking at ammo. I tend to check for previous posts to see whether they are a genuine numpty and troll for fun, or whether I've read the current post wrong. If they quote from the same thread the chances are they've remembered something that has been posted and is using it as a reminder

It's funny how many people think they are such a perfect parent for example that they know the best way to do something & totally slate anyone for doing anything else, or for being so incompetent that they need to ask for advice. Then you get the people who know everything & will tie up 10 pages of a thread arguing with each other of something only vaguely related to the original post.
I'm not saying everyone should agree all the time we are all entitled to our opinions but there are way's of doing it & some people are downright nasty!!

Correct. People say things on discussion forums that I believe they would never say in a face to face conversation. It's a lot less personal typing away at a keyboard, and you sometimes get very rude and aggressive responses.
I've learned over the years to never take discussion forums too seriously. It's not worth getting your blood pressure up! :D

There will always be arguments on here and in general day to day life but as you say it needs to be done in a productive manner. If we all thought the same and had the same opinions it would be a very boring world but at the same time there are ways and means of getting your point across. A few people on here believe they are right and they refuse to listen to any ifs/buts or anything that would make what they think wrong!

Some people really need to learn to accept and to take constructive criticism!

It just gets very tiring to read!

I do agree that there are some people who find the board a perfect soapbox (see any post asking about NHS pensions for instance!) but there is a lot of helpful advice as well. I think you just have to filter it.
I do think that some posters ask questions that would tax the most kindly & patient of people.
    I recall 2 examples:
a new mum who thought that the council should re-house her because her council flat was up a flight of stairs, and she shouldn't be expected to carry the baby up them
a woman who, following disciplinary action, had been demoted at work; and taking home only enough to pay her kids' school fees, no bursaries available, getting into serious debt

considering what many ordinary hard-working people have to cope with, and the problems faced by many posters on this board, honestly, what did these 2 expect? In the flesh, tea & sympathy maybe, but on a board geared to practical advice?!?!

I agree with that. You reap what you sow. I have seen posters ask a relationship question and then get a lot of reply and a lot of advice. Then the same poster comes back a few week/ months later with a similar problem because they haven't taken any advice on board (obviously it didn't suit them) and they get advice again (often the same advice as they got before), they go away and come back a few weeks/ months later with the same problem. It can be quite infuriating and require the patient of a saint - which I have not so I tend to stay away from these! Some people do lose their patience. Understandable.
