The reason they chose you was that there is a high likelyhood that as there were 2 of you the house you live in is empty while you are at the shops. The £5 is irrelevant, simply a way of getting your address which can be checked out in the knowledge that at least 2 if not all of the occupants are out for probably another 30 mins at least.0

I've only just noticed that a lot more replies have been posted since I last looked, so thought I would give an update!
I can confirm it was definitely a scam, as I haven't heard anything from the girl since, even though she had my mobile number. I also didn't contact her as I decided to forget about it rather than risk doing something else wrong
What have I learnt? Yes, I'm a soft touch and I'll be a bit more wary in the future, although I can't guarantee I wont ever be daft again.
I really liked the suggestion on here that I should have offered to meet them in the garage and pay for petrol once put in the motorbike! I'll certainly bear that in mind for the future and not hand over my hard earned cash!
I'm still going to be generous with my smile though! It costs nothing and is usually returned in kind! Be happy everyone, lifes too short to be wary and miserable!

At least just a couple of quid down to experience.

Round here a very popular con is for a woman to approach another woman (usually elderly) and try to sell them a necklace, they are pushy and insist on putting it on the victim to show how it looks, except when they remove 'it' they actually remove the victims proper pearls or chain - leaving the worthless junk instead. Work in pairs to confuse the victim.
My wife a couple of years back wound down her car window to give directions to some lad, meanwhile in an instant his mate opened the back door and legged it with her laptop bag. Learnt a hard lesson about keeping the doors locked.0 -
it is hard to tell a scam or not but some people are in genuine need of help. I for one am glad that not everyone thinks people are trying to scam them.
when i was PG with DS1 i was travelling fromdevon to norfolk on the bus, i was due to have money go into my account that day, which i needed for food and drink on the bus (it was going to be a 10 hour journey) the money didnt go in i think id moved forgot to change the address so they had suspended my account) , i had no food, and 1 bottle of drink.
got to london to change buses and my OH went to put some money into teh account and discovered it was suspended, so i was stuck in london 6 months pregnant, no food no drink and no way of getting any money, i couldnt call anyone in london as i didnt know anyone.
i sat crying (once discovering id get no money) and teh woman next to me asked what was wrong...i explained she handed me some money to go get some food, i bought the bare minimum and gave her the change (she tried to refuse it but i wasnt going to take more than i needed) if she had been cynical, she might have question why i would make a journey unprepared, or that i couldve been faking teh tears etc and not offered the money, yes it wouldnt have killed me to go without food or drink but being heavily pregant can make you very emotional lol.
I would echo what others had said i wouldve paid for her petrol not handed her the cash, i have done this in the past, some homeless people begging outside tescos, it was clear it was for drink but they said they were hungry so i went and bought some bread and cheese for them to eat, it was the best i could do as i was only 16 and just left home, i was on benefits in college so had very little but didnt lke the idea of someone going hungry!0
