A friend is due to have her first baby shortly and I'd like to buy a couple of gifts (hopefully without spending a fortune) - one that is something for the baby and one that is something for the mum.
The gift for the baby I have no trouble with ideas for but I'm not sure what is appropriate to give to a new mum.
So to all the mums on here - any ideas? what would you appreciate most?

TIME. make up a little booklet of vouchers -
you'll come round and watch the baby for an hour while she has a bath/she and OH go for meal
You'll come round and help with cooking/housework when she's knackered
If she'll be a SAHM for a bit, you'll go and keep her company when you can so she gets adult interaction who isn't "family"
I'm sure there are many other ideas I can't think of right now!
Those are brilliant ideas and I'd love to be able to be there for her but I live 120 miles away
I expect we will go up and visit once they're settled at home and ready for company but for now I need something that can be put in the post Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

What about a little hamper of smellies so she can have a nice soak and a bit of a pamper? Or a voucher for a facial/manicure etc. Something which is a bit of a treat Sealed Pot Challenge #817 £50 banked Sealed Pot Challenge #817 £50 banked 0 0

How about some PJ's, I know its not original but hear me out. I remember spending so much time in my PJ's - for the first few weeks, it was nearly midday before I got washed and dressed. Anyway, I was constantly tired and I do remember it being nice to have a soak in the bath and then putting on some nice PJ's.0

There's a book published by Netmums which I think is mainly contributions from lots of new mums called something like 'babies first year' - really worth looking into - because IMHO a brand new mum probably doesnt have time for smellies and bubble baths :-)
I'm fairly certain I feel asleep stood up in the shower a couple of times :-)Snootchie Bootchies!0

I definitely agree with the pamper hamper,
and if you hop over to the grabbit forum, there is a thread about a great deal at the body shop, with free gift and 30% off...

I have a 5 week old baby and love the idea of nice comfy pjs - if she is breastfeeding take this into consideration and get a top with buttons! I've only had two baths since baby was born so pamper stuff would be wasted on me (I have showered Im not a smelly cow but a five min shower doesn't give much time to use face masks etc).
Other thingsI would like are a diary (handy to write down all of baby's appointments & feeding times) - organised mum do some gorgeous ones http://www.organised-mum.co.uk/Family-Life-Book-Diary.html or a gift voucher to a food place that delivers (not sure how many places do these though) - cooking is low on my agenda at the moment & toast is not very exciting.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0

Thank you all for your lovely ideas!
I really like the PJs idea so I think I'll have a look for some. The pamper stuff is good too but she's a bit like me and has reactions to smellies (I wish I could use bodyshop stuff but my skin hates it!) so I'll have to save that idea for the next friend with a baby!
ETA - possibly a daft question, but I understand that bodies don't immediately return to pre-pregnancy days so would it be best to buy maternity PJs? If so, any ideas where to look for such a thing??Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

I am 39 weeks pregnant at the moment, and would love it if someone got me some smellies from Lush as a present. I love their bath bombs etc but it's something I rarely treat myself to. Even if the new mum has stitches etc, she will appreciate a nice soak in the bath once healed, it will be a real treat to get a long soak in the bath
Oh poo, missed the part about allergies.. sorry how about a new dressing gown? a quick cover up for if the doorbell rings and she doesn't want to answer the door in her PJ's how about a new dressing gown? a quick cover up for if the doorbell rings and she doesn't want to answer the door in her PJ's

It would probably be better just to get some loose comfy pyjamas. It can be upsetting to have to wear maternity things after the baby is born. In any case many Mums do lose weight quite quickly.browneyedbazzi wrote: »

The most important thing I had was a good quality hand cream [preferably a barrier cream] as I was always washing my hands. I also was given an oil of olay shower set, it meant that I could have a quick shower and not have to use body lotion.0

            I'd go with food/takeaway vouchers.
When i had DD, i was just so tired, and really not in the mood to cook, and i loved it when someone made and brought us all a huge cottage pie with veg.
 That, i really appreciated .. x0
