  • I requested my flat to be revaluated back in May 2010 and received a letter in June from the valuation office saying that they would give me a response within 4 months. I have received nothing at all from them so sent them a recorded delivery letter asking for a reply. This was 3 weeks ago and still heard nothing. What can I do?
  • I am desperate to find out what to do! The VOA have ignored my request for an assessment and they are ignoring my letters! What can I do?

I do not know what to do next and I would be grateful for some advice to take this further as I believe there to have been an error in banding the houses back in 1993 when this was done.

They may not be aware of neighbours' extensions or the extensions may not be reflected in the CT bands yet as houses haven't been sold. See if you can find other houses in the neighbourhood of similar type and size as yours and ion Band A.

You could write to your MP and see if he/she could ask VOA to review your case as you believe you have not been treated fairly.

Phone them! If still no contact, complain to the Customer Service Manager for the group, name and address is on VOA website.

  • Council: Sutton
    Old Band: E
    New Band: D

After carrying out the instructions from this article my banding has been reduced from E to D.

I have lived in my current house since 1999 and have received a nice little cash rebate from Sutton Council just in time for Christmas. Also, I am not required to pay any further council tax until January 2011. What a bonus!!!!
  • Local Borough Council: Newark and sherwood
    Council Tax Band Before: C

    Council Tax Band After: B
    Amount refunded: £260
    Annual saving going forward: £200

Sorted within the space of a week and a half!!!! If there's anything worth doing, this is it!!
    Thanks Martin :o)
  • :jI recently phoned my local Assessor and have now had my tax band reduced from B to A.
It has taken a couple of months and the council have now paid us back £407.56 and we have a reduced payment for the next few months. Thanks for your tips.:rotfl:
  • Hiya,

I have just got my council tax re-band in Bristol, from a B to an A. I received a refund of £465 and will be saving £174 per year.

Thank you money saving expert.
  • Hi,

I am new here so go easy on me!! I applied to have my council tax lowered. All figures pointed to a band c according to the nationwide website and other houses in the area.

I have just had this rejected and have been told that the nationwide website is not accurate enough and the Gloucestershire Council has there own figures that they use.

According to the nationwide website in April 1991 our house was worth £62913 way below the band D figure figure for the South West.

Has anyone else had the same problem???

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    thanks

    toni

It isn't the council who deal with CT banding, it is the Valuation Office Agency (part of HMRC). They have details of virtually every property sale in the country and so have a lot of actual sales evidence from 1991.

I'm ex VOA and have personally found both Halifax and Nwide house price indices to be inaccurate, often in excess of 10%. The "South West" is far too large an area to get an accurate figure, and it could be argued that Glos is in the S Midlands, Tewkesbury, for example, is only about 30 miles from Birmingham.

I can only suggest you look for houses of a similar type and size in the neighbourhood in Band C and approach the VOA again with this new evidence.
