No. You will have to ask the current occupiers of your previous homes to enquire about band reductions. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Local Borough Council:calderdale council
Council Tax Band Before:F
Council Tax Band After:E
Amount refunded:£2800 plus
Annual saving going forward:not sure yet
i saw this on MSE some time ago and followed all the instructions and my valuation came out about £5000 over the "very likely to be successful" bracket so didnt pursue it but then found out my neighbour had received £2200 back after challenging it. Both houses identical. So i rang the number i got off the site for my council had a quick chat with a nice man who agreed they were very similar houses and that he would put my request forward it would take about 8 weeks. This has taken less then that and i have received confirmation my bracket has been reduced and i should be receiving over £2800 back!!!!!!
Thank you so much MSE.com :T0 -
South Staffs Council
Was E now band D
I contacted the valuation office and asked for an explanation as to why both neighbours were a band D but I was a band E. Approx 4 weeks later I received a letter agreeing that I should be a band D and this would be back dated to when I moved in which was June 2002. Yesterday I received further notification from the council office that I was due a refund of £2085! Thanks Martin.0 -
My local council, Woking, have just refunded me £2300 when they changed my house band from G to F.
Thank you Martin's Money tips.

Simple to do , just clicked on the query banding link on the VOA website alongside my property, filled in the form quoting Nationwide figures and how much I paid for property (was built in 2003) - 6 weeks later letter in post confirming reduction0 -
I decided to check my council tax banding, when sorting out the many papers, after my husband died last July. I telephoned MANCHESTER city council, after checking identical houses in my area, which were all 'B' banded whilst I was a 'C'. This was on 27/8/10. Today 6/10/10, I received notification that I has been rebanded to a 'B'. The coded entry is 6 which states " the entry in the council tax list has been amended in the light of additional information". This will make a difference of £147.00 a year, which is almost £3.00 a week. I have not had mention of a reclaim/rebate yet, early days, but I shall certainly be keeping my eye open. I have been in the house for 10 years, paying the wrong band. Well done :money:MSE, I'm really pleased. P Lees0

Well done Pauline and everyone else.
Similarly, I recently checked my council tax banding, never did feel that it was right, but never got round to checking it out.
After checking identical houses in my area, which were all 'B' banded whilst I was strangely a 'C'.
Contacted the VOA office about 2 weeks ago and today 6/10/10, I received notification that I has been rebanded to a 'B' reducing my Council Tax by around £145.00 a year!
The letter from the VOA says that Thurrock Borough Council will be informed of this change in due course.
So now what? Should I expect a back payment for the 8 years we've been overpaying? I only ask as the guy I spoke to at the VOA office said that I won't get anything back.
Is it down to the Council? Unfortunately I am yet to find any other success stories from Thurrock BC?0 -

It will depend on the "effective date" of the new band. Usually if the band was incorrect from 1 Apr 1993 (start of CT) or date property first banded if after then, the new band is effective from that date. There are exceptions, a "material reduction" case would only be backdated to when the problem started, but I don't think yours is an "m r" case.
If the new band is not backdated then ask VOA why it hasn't been. Thurrock (and any council) can only (and are obliged to) refund any monies overpaid based on the effective date given by the VOA. Where the refund is small and in the early part of the CT year most councils simply adjust the outstanding CT bill by the amount to be refunded. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
