What gives the best colour quality pictures between LCD TVs and Plasma TVs. My current TV has just blown and I can only spend up to £400 in nearby shops like Tesco, Comet and PC world.

We went for plasma, simply because it is 600Hz rather than 50/100 Hz. We watched titles moving up the screen on LCD and they juddered, but are smooth as anything on our plasma. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

I personally prefer LCD over plasma as I find the picture to be more 'sharp' and not as 'florescent' (if I can call it that) and more natural picture (even when excessively changing the settings), as for colour every TV is different you just have to go look.
and that goes for TV is general you may go to the shop and go whoahh plasma is awesome or you might hate it.
I can't say I've ever noticed the juddering of titles though my LCD TV is 200Hz so doesn't really happen although to be honest I cant say I spend my time watching credits and titles
having a quick look on currys I'd prob get something like this or this0 -
Someone told me once plasma is great for film and tv, LED and LCD is what to go for if you are a gamer.
Check out richer sounds, great prices on TV's, have shops all over the country0 -
on a lower budget i would have good read of reviews rather than going for either plasma or lcd, just get the best one in your price range - as above richer sounds is good for a dealThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. Just a point here. Theres no such thing as an LED TV. Its an LCD TV with an LED backlight rather than a CCFL (Flouresent lamp).
Also I personally dont like the way vertical lines tend to prism (i.e. go red, green & blue) briefly on Plasmas when the camera pans horizontally. E.g. watch the centre line on a football pitch as the camera pans. Occurs even on supposedly top of the range models. Once seen never forgotton.0 -
My Panasonic plasma has a super picture quality, and I chose it because in my opinion it produced the best SD picture quality out of all the TVs I viewed (excluding top of the range Pioneers, but they were costing silly money).0

Plasma has traditionally been better for colour, blacks and motion and available in bigger sizes. LCD has traditionally used less energy and been higher resolution (Full HD first). However they are coming together more and more with the perceived defects in each being chipped away at every time.
Anyone who tells you one is far better than the other, that plasmas have screen burn, or that LCDs are blurry (or other FACTS YOU MUST BELIEVE) is talking crap and just repeating pub trivia.
I prefer plasma, I still believe the blacks and colours are better, and I like the glass screen. Have a look around yourself. Try hard to get full HD for £400, Freeview HD would be nice, but you mightn't manage it, and it doesn't matter so much if you have a PVR.
takeiteasy seems to have fallen into the trap of looking at screens with the settings turned way up (store mode/dynamic) where the LCDs go way bright and the plasmas don't. This is not the same environment as your living room, and that 'dull' plasma is absolutely bright enough for your living room. Brighter isn't better.0 -
Agreed TVs in shops have a "store" mode that turns up the backlight on LCDs.
Let your eyes be the judge, looking at the same TV picture at the same time in the same room.0 -
I had aSmsung LCD for about 5 years and noticed vertical shadowy lines appearing when watching light shades (as though the backlight was showing through). It was and is still fine for deep colours.
15 months ago we treated ourselves to a plasma after watching a couple in friends/family homes.
It was a toss up between a a Sony LCD or a Panasonic plasma.
Another family member went for the Sony afterwards (smaller size).
Having watched both brand new sets IMO the plasma is crisper and has stronger contrast. It is a 600HZ and I don't really watch much football/rugby so haven't noticed any panning issues.
The Sony is good too and has some better features wifi dongle etc.
One downside to the Plasma is in strong sunlight from the front/side - don't know if this is due to the "gloss" screen.
We still use the old Samsung and it is used for gaming. I was surprised how quickly it went in normal family viewing.
The benefit of LED is that they use less power. The big plasmas have a heavy drain."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Thanks for pointing that out.
Interesting the premium they charge over "LCD".
I was a little confused as a recent laptop we brought said LED but also TFT now I know.
The old LCD Samsung we have takes time to "warm up" these days to get to a the right contrast - t is on the dark side for for 10mins or so."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
