Tired old story about car insurance

I would understand if it was a desirable car to steal. It's not.0

My sons renewal price for his 2006 vauxhall corsa 1.4 is £1485! This is with 1 years no claims bonus. He is 19 and has driven a whole year with no claims, yet still he is penalised with high insurance quotes. His first year cost him £1500, so he gets just £15 discount for having no claims for a year. when he got quotes 3 months ago to see how much he would have to have for his next years insurance the quotes were coming back at about £850, so he was rather shocked at this hike in prices. comparison sites can get it to £1200, but that is with a £750 excesss. He should be an ideal younger person to insure. he lives at home with parents and is a trainee accountant and drives less than 6000 miles a year. What more do they want. Its ridiculous!0

OP, are you female?0

Nope, I'm male. To be honest it would make little difference right now. Something is wrong with the postcode (something I can't change). I have a friend who works in the industry who's looking into it for me, the difference in prices shocked even him.
I've asked friends on facebook and the prices for insurance locally are quite wildly varying (taking into account age and background).
Ironically I got a reminder for the insurance on the Impreza. £1,000!
So the difference between the insurance on a 1.4 Ibiza and the Impreza is about £200, which makes no sense at all.0 -
Just to correct some wrong assumption it is not the cc of the car that is important it's how much it would cost to repair. So an old car is cheaper to insure than a new car as they will write off an old car at a lower cost. If you like the repair cost is capped. Likewise something like a Ford will be cheaper than a Japanese car.
The best thing to do if play "what if" with the online quotes. When looking for insurance for my daughter, 0 NCD, 19yr, a 10yr 1.6i escort was cheaper than a 1 l car of some make I forget. Even similar age cars with larger engines were cheaper than the 1 l so engine size is not a good measure.
If you want really cheap insurance get a old car, fully comp, max out the excess and just assume it will be written off and you'll be £500 worse off. Note that you only pay excess on your repairs. So if you have 750 excess and the car is worth £300 you're only losing £300 whatever. BTW fully comp with max excess is usually cheaper than TPFT which is what it is more or less.0 -
its going to be far, far cheaper to repair a 4 year old ibiza than it would a 11 year old Impreza would it not?
Parts were incredibly expensive when I was working on it.0 -

OH, MY, GOD
my renewal is £1500!
Zurich won't offer cover this year so we've gone to Aviva on your behalf and sold your backside down the river.0
