How to deal with snobbery?

I've recently been given a car by my dad to help me get back to work. It's not the best looking car to be honest as it's a bit tatty with a few dents etc.
I live in social housing which forms part of a private cull-de-sac in a small village. The other houses have smart cars parked up and put my car to shame.
I feel really ashamed to have it parked on my drive but as it's been given to me I feel obliged and it's better than nothing. Do you think people will take much notice or am I just overeacting?

Its just a car. Be grateful you have one.
Its you over reacting. As long as the car is taxed/Ins/MOT'd, then surely its no-ones business. And unless it were on bricks or windows smashed in, I don't think the neighbours will care either; but it becomes their problem if they did.0 -
Do you mean all the other tenants in the social housing have posh cars? Or is that just down to those in the 'private' cul-de-sac?
I would think if you bring a tatty little banger into the close, they will write to The Times, the council, the United Nations, etc, etc, until you remove the scruffy little oik from the (doubtlessly) well scrubbed roadway which they no doubt clean every Sunday morning, along with their cars.
No doubt they will also send you and all your family to Coventry, beat up all visitors to your home, inform local shops that they must no longer sell anything to you, and have the power companies disconnect all services to your property forthwith.
Under no circumstances must you be seen within a 10 mile radius of your home with anything less than a 6 month old minter, preferably with alloy wheels, air conditioning, blacked out windows and metallic paint."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
They all think the way your thinking, hence all the "smart cars".
But it's often "kippers'n'curtains", they probably live in virtual poverty behind those closed doors JUST to pay for that new car.
My car is an 04 plater, my neighbours have oldish cars, we all live in privately owned 3 bedroom houses. Im waiting for someone to start off a wave of new car buying in our street. It kicked off (briefly) around the corner when one guy bought a new Lexus, his neighbour very quickly got a new Audi, but didn't make it's way around here.
Where my folks live, it's a very affluent area and most of the truly rich folk drive around in "old bangers". It's the wannabe's that have the Merc/BMW's on the drive.
Free yourself from this self inflicted oppression, stand up and say "do you know what, it's cheap to run, doesn't owe me anything, gets me to where I need to go, I don't have to worry about planks driving shopping trolleys into it and I really don't care!!!"
There are better things to spend money on!
Now don't you feel better?“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

To be honest I wouldn't worry about all the posh cars parked outside the other houses, just think to yourself, most will either be company cars or on HP.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0

or am I just overeacting?
Yes ...................0 -
I own the oldest cars in my little area and I'm proud that they're still running and in fact running better than most of the newer econoboxes that my neighbours own.
That probably makes me a snob of a different nature. :rotfl:0 -
The only one with issues is you. You are looking down on yourself, your neighbours aren't doing it. Wash it, give it a polish and it'll look fine. It is a way to get from a to b and as said above, if its legal, who cares? You certianly shouldn't.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
I doubt anyone will care. If it bothers you that much why don't you tidy your car up a bit. Its amazing what a good polish and bit of back to black can do. You could also have a go at sorting out some of the dents etc yourself - its not that hard if you have a bit of patience.0

I live in a little village, most of the people with real money drive some of the oldest, clapped out cars, it's those that like to pretend they have money that have the flash carsI hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0
