I do that anyway in urban areas, but the problem is that what these people do is smash the side windows and reach in with a knife. So locked doors don't offer a lot of protection.

The only thing you can do if stuck in traffic is give them what they want, an insurance claim is better than being stabbed. I could never understand these people who try and fight off armed attackers, your life is not something you can replace, your wallet is.

It takes a lot more effort to smash a window than open a door and it attracts attention. Why not leave a small gap in front and if someone comes up like this then you have the car in 1st gear and give it some or drive up the pavement etc?

Also a large steering lock makes an excellent defensive weapon.

TBH I think the probability of such a thing happening is very small. If you drive a run of the mill car then why would they bother? If it's expensive then they might be interested, but they prefer to steal the keys from inside houses overnight.
