A return to our local town (about 8 miles) on the bus is £4.80. To take my son to the hospital a couple of weeks ago, when I had no car, cost me almost £30 (Home to town A, town A to town B, town B to hospital), and took just over 3 hours to get there. Coming home took 20 minutes, and cost £11 in a taxi, as I couldn't bear the thought of another 3 hours on buses with a bored grumpy 5-year-old. I did buy returns on the journey out, which were thrown away - I figured the extra money for a taxi was worth the lack of hassle from my son!

Oh, Barnsley - the bus interchange has two routes numbered 22. One between Barnsley and Rotherham and the other in the direction of Dodworth.

I think it's changed (again) according to the website #22 goes to Cubley and service 218 is Rotherham . BUT knowing how things work round here it'll probably have changed again by this time tomorrow. :D
They are always changing the times, routes, stands, colour of buses etc etc. No wonder the fares keep going up

They now charge school children adult prices unless they have a pass. They have to pay £5 for it. If she wants to go to town she has to pay £3.80 there & £3.80 return. I have downloaded the form but she hasn't had her photo done so I can send it off. There prices are the same on school days too. She is 13yrs old. Its ridiculous.

My old home town has scrapped singles/returns you can only get a day rider. In 2003 when the new buses were brought in, it was £1, which is good. The town is only a small town. I use to live just over a mile from town. They started going up 10p a year, so if it's followed that trend £1.80 for dayrider, annoying if you only want a single! Which is why if there's 2 people visiting family, Taxi!!

London bus prices are ok, £1.30 for any single journey with a price cap of about £4.
  • My area's absolutely ridiculous.
It costs £6.60 for a day rider, £4.40 for a return to the next town (which is about 3 miles away), and around £4.80 single to the nearest decent town (I'm not sure of the return price, as the driver's always advise us to buy a day rider as it's cheaper lol).

they will keep going up unfortunately as all subsidies for public transport is being reduced as someone told me the other day:

    http://www.channel4.com/news/exclusive-90-of-english-councils-slashing-bus-subsidies

I can't find the proper link, but i'm dreading what prices really will go up to. Car insurance is going up too (i don't drive) but still its getting expensive to get anywhere!
    :T:T :beer: :beer::beer::beer: to the lil one :) :beer::beer::beer:

It's not just buses, the trains are even worse. Last winter I used the train to get to work a few times and for the journey I took a single fare was £3.00......for a SIX MINUTE ride. That's equivalent to £30 AN HOUR to stand in the aisle of a glorified cattle truck . The silly thing is a return costs £3.10, so that means it only costs 60p an hour to get home, even though the journey is exactly the same length and it's possibly even the same train. Madness.

Incidentally I did investigate using the local bus service. The journey planner broke the trip down into three stages, the first of which is about a mile and a half in distance. When I read the small print though it turned out there isn't actually a bus provided so you have to walk the first stage to get to bus stop number two. That's very handy when there's a foot or two of snow on the pavements, not.
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
And I look like a tramp and tramps like us
Baby we were born to walk

I'll look out the next time I'm there - learned the hard way about the two 22s when I caught the wrong one three weeks ago.
  • A day ticket here is £10! There is absolutely no incentive to use the bus if you have a car, even a single to the big town is £3.50 and they don't do returns either, just singles and day/season tockets.

Yeah good old Barnsley with its two 22 routes. Its a recent change one to rotherham i think its the ventura bus and then theres the 22 to cubley/dodworth. Though one stands at one side of the station others at other end.
Sometimes i like to imagine that im living on the breadline as a single mum with 3 children to feed and clothe, bills to pay and very little time to myself........ then i wake up and realise im a princess with prince charming by my side and a lovely white castle........ oh wait
