I wish that there was an ongoing list of all companies and their tariffs per Kwh so that we could all compare easily and know instantly which is the cheapest. Does such a list exist?

I am thinking of switching from Eon to Ovo for gas and electricity due to a price comparison website or two, but I want to be absolutely sure that Ovo are going to definitely be cheaper.

    That is so disappointing.

If only, Picher. I am just wishing that there was something like this which we could all look at, so that we know at a glance where we stand.

prices vary over the whole country even for the same company...... so not feasible, and probably more confusing...
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?

Unit rates by themselves don't tell the whole story as all the companies give discounts for dual fule, paying by direct debit, if paying cash cheque or card there are prompt pay discounts that need to be taken into consideration as well as unit rates. also number of units primary unit rate is charge for varies with some companies, and some companies charge a standing charge instead of two tier rates so not really the best way to go about deciding to change on the basis of pence per kwh charge by a power co

If I was a utility company, I would have a department devoted to monitoring the competition, so I would have a spreadsheet or database of all the tariffs, across the country, so I can design tariffs to compete.

In order to attract customers who only look at Tier 2 rates, obviously I would come up with one that has the lowest Tier 2 rate, but only on ONE fuel, with slightly less Dual Fuel discount like 1.6%, and Direct Debit discount of 3.9%. On a £1,000 annual bill, that is £35 difference I would make on discounts. Obviously Tier 1 rate would be higher.

This table would be regionalised, printed and laminated, and given to cold callers up and down the country, but that is now disallowed. So, in order to make good use of this material, I would send it out as junk mail, stand in front of supermarkets and stations, etc.

As an added bonus, there will be four tables: Fixed, Capped, Variable and Discount, for your comfort and convenience. They will be listed in provider name order, so as not to appear biased, but the lowest Tier 2 rate will always be subtly highlighted. The annual bill for each entry will not be included. At the end, an appendix will use a TYPICAL tariff to work out the annual bill for low/medium/high usage. Obviously, the highlighted tariffs with the designed Tier 2 should work out cheaper than the typical tariff.

So such a table can easily be available, should a utility company want to do it. They won't because they know the bad publicity that follows is not worth it.

Pincher, you should be working in the energy industry. If there were more people with your knowledge and ideas, we'd all be better placed in finding the right tariff. For just one company to do this would make a lot of sense, but instead, we are confused by all the different options and choices, even varying by region. I swear they do this to confuse us. I have always wondered why just one company won't do as you have suggested so eloquently above. They might not be allowed to cold call (although I've had npower on the door recently), but they could do what the supermarkets do in sending out literature which highlights their own tariffs in comparison with competitiors'. If THAT is not allowed for the energy industry, for whatever reason, then at the very least, they could have the same information on a website. You made some great points, Pincher.

A list of tariffs would make interesting reading and be a statiticians wet dream.....there are no doubt some interesting variations from region to region.

As all the tariffs feature some kind of discount (with the exeption of pre-pay) most of them will cancel each other out; if you think about it theres probably only a few quids difference in the monies that are discounted.

So, a full list of tariffs will make interesting reading....differences between standing charges by tariff and region, the availability of tariffs in each region etc etc etc.

EON do NOT give a dual fuel discount unless you sign up to pay by direct debit. If you do not want to pay by DD the only discount is 3% for payment within 14 days. We paid EON by DD for many years but the DD payments increased by over 50% and at review and did not want to refund overpayment as they were going to increase tariffs. Three years later I still need to put less aside each month than EON want for DD.

They will give you the unit prices if you ask nicely, then I have to go to a comparison site and go through each plan.
Once the base prices are worked out there's then the discounts to start all over again with...

There is, it's calle a comparison site.
Click on any tariff and you will get details of their unit charges ... and all other included charges/discounts.

And that is why comparison sites exist, because knowing only the unit charges means nothing; you need to know the annual cost for comparison purposes :)
