MSE News: Escape BT contracts & beat price rises

Just to update I rang again. The chap was very helpful to be fair. He said that because I am on a special deal they wouldn't increase the price of it. This is the reason I would pay a penalty. In any case I spoke to a few other ISP and they will give me £50 for breaking contract. So in essence I will lose a few pounds or so. So I got my mac code. Just got to decide who to move to know.
O2 were the best for me. £20 a month with free line rental (I don't use a home phone, so no point to having a calls package). Plus if you get referred by a friend you each get £20 in John Lewis, M&S or Amazon vouchers (although you can also get Quidco...)urs sinserly,

Went on BT Chat and the lady wanted £37.61 to cancel. I argued and she got a CS to phone me. He repeated it would cost £37.61 to cancel, after a brief argument he agreed I could cancel but offered me a £3 a month reduction to stay which I declined.
It appears that BT are trying to play hardball and you have to be insistent that they have broken their own T&C's before they will agree to cancelling your contract.0 -
Contacted BT today and they told me that as my broadband/calls/tv package will not change they cannot cancel my contract without penalty.
They advised that I am able to cancel my line with them as that is the part that is going up whilst keeping my BT broadband. So I have done that, its a hollow victory but I am one step closer to getting BT free!!0 -
Im in 12 month BT contract with their all UK calls package for £4.70. I want to cancel as my costs keep creeping up and my direct debits never cover it despite me hardly using the phone. From the article I saw, I can get out of my contract without penalty if I notify them I want to leave within 10 days. However, this article was 30 August, its now 12 October and I have still not been notified by BT that their line rental is goin up in December. Has other BT customers actually had something from BT in writing yet?
Thanks:heart2: Cookiepops :heart2:0 -
the price increase is on the 3.12.11 so you have 10 days from that date, or whenever you recieved your bill notifying you of the change.
our bill is due on the 13.11.11 so we will be notifying them of our wish to cancel from that date.0 -
great, thanks for that NittyGritty. I'll check when my bill is due and be ready! haven't worked out who I will move to yet though!

Hi. Does anyone know if the email is sent seperately, or is it meant to be noted on our bill? I ask because I have been eagerly awaiting my notification from BT after suffering their TERRIBLE service for a few months. My bill came this morning (email - I dont receive a postal one) and there was only the usual link to "changes to your terms and conditions...", which mentions nothing about a price rise in december
Thanks0 -
if you dont get a paper bill, n you recieved your bill by email this morning then you can use that as notifaction even tho it doesnt state on there, you can just use their own website as it clearly states on there the increases on the 3rd of dec, you have 10 days0

as i have broadband with sky, i,m going to switch to sky for phone line as u get a £5 discount when u have broadband n sky together, so thats a nice little bonus0

Ok, cheers
. It's a bit of a cheek from BT calling it "notification" though... The link in the email directs to something unrelated to price increases, and you have to hunt around on the site to find the PDF. The only notification I've had was from this site! There will probably be a lot of people who didn't get prior warning by being a member of this site, wondering why their bill increases in december. Unless you're specifically looking for the info on the BT website, you'd have no idea and be past the 10 days period. I reckon there is a good argument for failure to properly notify people.
Anyway, thanks again. I'll be on the blower to BT shortly
