MSE News: Escape BT contracts & beat price rises

I spoke to BT today about cancelling. I am on option 1 with weekend calls. I can cancel the phone no problem but the broadband would cost me £58 in penalties because I am ending the contract early. The operative assured me that the broad band is not going up in price?? Even though I sent the link with the increases on to her. She would have it and was adamant I would still get the broadband at the same price. To be honest £58 is better than I thought and I might cancel it anyway just to get away from bt0

Call them back and get a 2nd CS to look at it. Have you received notification (by email or with a bill) of the price increase? That starts the 10day cancellation period.Cider Country Solar PV generator: 3.7kWp Enfinity system on unshaded SE (-36deg azimuth) & 45deg roof0 -
ok heres my issue, i,m with bt for phone, and sky for broadband, heres my questions,
1/when can i ring and ask bt to cancel due to price increase
2/if i cancel with bt and say i go to sky, do i keep my number from bt, and also how would the switch work, would i lose line for a few days until sky install new line.
3/when you cancel bt wot happens? do i need to pay a reconnection fee with sky? and how long roughly will my line be down for while i/if i join sky talk
4/as anyone actually been sent email/ or read it on paper bill that their price is going to increase yet or will they start in december to send the notices out
one last thing, if bt agree to let me cancel my contract do i have to wait until my line goes dead, then go to sky and ask them to join up with them, my only concern is if i cancel bt i will lose my home phone number and start from scratch with a new number which i dont want to do,
do you get a number like broadband when u ask for a Mac code? so i can switch or doesnt it work like that0 -
Just to update I rang again. The chap was very helpful to be fair. He said that because I am on a special deal they wouldn't increase the price of it. This is the reason I would pay a penalty. In any case I spoke to a few other ISP and they will give me £50 for breaking contract. So in essence I will lose a few pounds or so. So I got my mac code. Just got to decide who to move to know.0

I called BT to find I wasn't actually in contract at all! Their retentions deal was £10.90 for eve and weekend calls and line rental, but I've decided to go to O2 for £7.50 just line rental.0

just had a reply back from BT they say i can cancel when my next bill comes in on the 13/11/11
and have 10 days to let them know0 -
I have just received my email notifying of my bill and changes. My question is this :-
My line is with BT and my Broadband is with O2. Can I now go with another phone provider without affecting my O2 broadband ?0 -
i was told once you get notifaction you have a 10 day time frame to cancel, if you wish to move to another provider(home phone line) you need to contact 02 or whoever your with and initate the move, you then need to contact BT to let them know your moving so they make a note on thier systems not to charge you a penalty fee when o2 take over.(make sure contact BT stating 1,your moving to whoever,2.you wont get charged penalty, basically make sure you get them to confirm no penalty charges will be applied once you move ,and keep a copy of thier reply) just to cover yourself0

I used to work for bt as a field engineer, all I will say is with the suppliers like primus, postoffice, o2 , talktalk etc lines, when things go wrong no one is in a rush to repair them. Only openreach are authorised to touch the exchange and poles , for the extra bt is worth going for the line advance deal.
Once you move to a provider, if you want to go back to be it will be classed as a new install.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -
