Thanks again for your views....even the Cybersquatters Page !
I agree with LittleVoice finding it hard to believe that I would have to apply for a never-to-be-used Provisional Licence just to open a Savings Account and as my salary did not exceed standard rate tax, nor did I have any expenses etc, I was fortunate never to be troubled with the Inland Revenue.
Your replies have however given me an idea, a few months ago I attempted to claim my first ever tax rebate (£500) from the Inland Revenue for last year, applied On-Line but the Form asked for my Unique Reference Number in addition to my Unique National Insurance number, I didn't know it (British Establishments administration, don't you just love 'em?).... tried phoning the Inland Revenue but gave up after half an hour of being passed around their automated system.
Perhaps now is the time to try again and attempt to use the tax refunds covering letter as ID?
The money opinions4U is sitting in my current account, I haven't opened a savings account with them as their rates are pretty lousy (as are most!).

Wow, you really do seem to be up the proverbial creek if ID is required. I suspect Santander will only accept a tax coding or a statement from HMRC.
The answer is to find an account that will check your ID electronically, as you have proved that it can be done with Egg. Unfortunately their rates are now rubbish.
How about ING? 3.1% AER variable for new customers.

Thanks for your replies, here is Coventry's shopping list of acceptable Id:
One each required from Group A AND B (Santander's was much the same)
Group A
* Passport, current, valid & Full - Mine expired in the 80's
* Old style driving Licence - Never had one, don't drive.
* Photo Card Driving Licence - See above
* EEA photo card Driving License - What is their fixation with driving?
* Disabled Driver's Pass - More driving ???
* EEA state identity card - How many people have these?
* DWP Retirement Pension Card - Not applicable, I'm not that old
* DWP Pension entitlement Letter - See above.
* Birth Certificate - Ah! I have one of these, but applies to Under 18 only!
GROUP B
* Utility bill (Gas/Elec etc original document) - I've gone paper free so have none.
* Water or Council tax bill (Original) - Mine are scanned & shredded.
* Photo Card Driving Licence - *?!/*!?
* Old style driving Licence - See above
* Bank Statement - I actually have this !!!!
* Cable/Satellite/Phone Bill (Original) - No Cable or satellite, Phone paper free billing.
* Tax Statement - PAYE, never had one.
* Local Council Tenancy agreement - I own my house.
* Solicitors letter confirming recent house purchase - Mine was not recent.
* Medical Card - Ah! I have this - but applies to Under 18 only...WHY???
I have Deeds to my house, Birth Certificate, Bank Statements (from another Bank), expired Passport.
I don't suppose it helps that I am applying On-Line (although I had no problem with an Egg account a year ago), Coventry don't have a local branch that I can go to and "present myself" with my original documents.
Nor do I understand why a Birth Certificate or Medical Card is acceptable from an Under 18 but not over 18 ?
And this fixation with Driving, do you not need ID for a Licence, like a Birth Certificate?
The money hermante, is sitting in a current account getting zero interest until I can find an account.
I'm beginning to think Sceptic001, that maybe I don't exist.
I suppose there's always a bit more room under my mattress?

I applied a few days ago with the Coventry for the poppy account and the website said I may need Id to open the account. Like you a bit limited to what I could send them!
It wasn't until I filled in the application and went through to the stage of printing the application form off to sign and return it to them, it then told me near the top of the application form that ID was not required.
so I would apply online and fill the application form in, it's worth a try!
They will not open the account until they receive your signed application form and deposit.0 -
Yes, if you haven't tried applying for the Coventry poppy account, try that first, but do it quick as, according to this post it is being withdrawn tomorrow...0

Thanks for the ING reminder, think I'll try with them. I had thought about it when they were heavily advertising recently.
That's interesting maggiesden, I applied on line and was sent the hard copy forms to complete & return with the ID. I didn't send a cheque because guess what?, I used the last of my rarely used cheques a couple of weeks ago and don't have a new book yet (Yes, even I'm beginning to think I sound a bit suspicious now?). The forms stated I could do a transfer from my current account once they had opened my account.
I could dig out the application forms again to check but as they've been at the bottom of the trash for a while and covered in all sorts I don't think I'll bother, but opt for Sceptic001's grateful reminder instead!
NB: I phoned the Inland Revenue regarding the tax refund and their automated reply was the same as I give out as a Payroll person, it will be dealt with automatically although no indication as to what Year I can expect receive it !!!
Thanks for all your input and your suggestion Sceptic001

From memory, you will need a cheque for your initial deposit to ING...0

If the electronic ID is failing with both Santander and Coventry I would suspect that could be down to either you not being on the voter's roll, or a problem with the way your name is linked to your address.
We get this regularly, for example, where someone has given their house a name, however it is still registered with Royal Mail as just a house number - always fails EID. Another one is where people provide their middle name as first name etc.0 -
I opened a couple of accounts recently without sending proof of identity, one with Barnsley BS and the other Yorkshire who own the Barnsley as it happens. I was sorry I bothered with the Post Office as, apart from wanting documentary proof, their application form was a long one.
The Barnsley a/c was set up in ten minutes and deposit made with a debit card.0 -

Then I'd love to know why I'm failed every fking time on the EID by everybody.
I am...
On the electoral roll for a very long time at this address: first name plus middle initial; no other person at this house.
Post address (house name) all as per the Royal Mail database.
Several bank accounts and several credit cards - all updated monthly on Experian etc.
No other forms of credit and no mortgage - 'cos I own it outright
Ex-directory on the BT database might be a problem for any search routines as they won't find me.
Yet everytime I want to open a new savings account it's "we cannot id you" drivel and I have to send off hard copies of the very same credit card statements as appear on the experian credit reports plus the certified passport copy.
I swear the next time it happens I'm putting in a formal complaint.
Ps I sometimes use an Inland Revenue statement of account as part of the ID supplied. The funny part is that there is a significant typographical mix up in my address as printed by the Inland Revenue on these statements - but they are accepted everytime as part ID by the savings group concerned...which proves that they probably don't even read them!0
