  • People have asked for some clarification. The bill said the correct amount and for it to be automatically taken on the correct day but the sum was never taken dispite the letter saying that it would debit the account on that day. Basically a confirmation of taking the money but never actually taking it. Simply never noticed the missing debit being taken from the account.

Ok, heres a simple question for you. What do YOU expect the company to do?

Ok everyone, people are being pretty rude here. Admitted I've been a little naive but suggestions of being cavalier etc are ridiculous. It's an easy oversight to make and actually do have a job to undertake each day. It appears that some people on here solely dedicate their lives to consulting their statements and cross referencing payments. To be honest shame on some of you for presenting such scorn for a mistake by a 'newbie'.

Yes I have a job to do each day too as do many people using this site but I check my bank statements a good couple of times a month, usually on line, to check what payments are due in and whether they have arrived and what is due to go out etc and I do this to avoid exactly the same situation you now find your self in, it takes a couple of minutes. Surely you cannot have anyone believe that you have been so busy that over the past 15 months or 5 quarters you have not had any opportunity to do this, yet plenty of time to search for and book a 'big holiday'. Sorry it is probably not scorn by people but total astonishment

  • I'm not sure, I was simply looking for advice, conventions, expectations and to find put how it works etc. Quite honestly this thread has become a judgemental farce. All I was after was a bit of relevent information.

Thanks for all relevant advice. Hockayak

Typical. Someone comes on here and doesnt like to be told the truth, expecting everyone to jump on the 'blame the company' bandwagon.

The fact that they have offered to knock 25% off your debit is extremley generous. They have in effect admitted their mistake and compensated you how they feel most appropriate.
  • As previously mentioned:

I was simply looking for advice, conventions, expectations and to find out how it works etc. Its not a blame the company - jumping on bandwagon thing. Simply information collecting trying to find out what the norm is.

I cant give you any legally type advice as I don't know the rules but I imagine that you gave meter readings and they sent bills, if this was me I would likely accept the 25% discount if the bills are about right, as I would have used the service/product. I say this as the agreement is only verbal at this stage and if you were to contest the situation further then the company may backtrack and want the lot. I would also get into the habit of checking my statements regularly to avoid such problems in the future.

If paying the extra £100 a month is going to leave you short check out the other boards about down sizing bills by swapping and the same with shopping etc, keeping a close watch on day to day spending.... i know its a shock to have to deal with but it is doable. I was made redundant and now manage on just under £600 a month less than I used to due to taking a lesser salaried job.

if you are really not happy to pay this at all them maybe you need to speak to citizens advice who may be able to guide you further....

I thought I had supported you (or been "open") as a consumer and a Newbie. The only advice I have to add to being a Newbie, an OP shouldn't shoot the messenger. Use the Ignore list instead.

I don't think my post was anything but constructive.

I gave you the Code of Practice which might help you. It was impossible to advise on whether the 25% reduction was good or bad because you didn't answer the questions I and others asked.

Without the exact timings and copies of the bills, most posters correctly in my view, feel that the offer is generous and I would guess it would be around the level of payments missed more than 12 months ago. It is also not entirely certain whether the backbilling rules will apply.

    I would take their offer.

I don't think you have endeared yourself to the posters because many of us have taken the time to offer constructive advice and all we have heard is rather lame excuses for non checking, while at the same time failing to provide extra information upon which the knowledgeable posters may have found some help for you.

You can't really expect sympathy when you get 25% knocked off your bill when all of us here who monitor our bills have to pay 100%.

At no stage have you thanked anyone for their advice.:(
