Sadly, as they appear to have produced bills/statements (and you have received and read them) the Billing code of conduct will not apply.

The thought was that the bill/statement may not be correct. i.e.it showed a different situation to the reality. Others have suggested that the account may have been credited, when nothing was coming from the bank account.i.e. a crossover situation.

It may be that the backbilling rules would apply to those circumstances beyond the 12 months.Whether that is more than 25%, again, we don't precisely know.

Lots of may's, I realise, until the OP clarifies it for us.

Just trying to spot possibilities or confirm that the 25% is reasonable.

I don't wish to be rude but I can't believe how the OP was just so cavalier in the management of their personal banking arrangements. How can you assume that the "money was going out as normal" when the bank statement would clearly show that it wasn't?

    Cheers

I understand the point you are making (and don't disagree), hovever *if* the billing appeared right, i.e payments credited (and we don't know because the OP hasn't confirmed) it is none of the utility's business how the customer conducts their banking. Well FWIW that's my consumer centric opinion.

Absolutely none of the Utility's business whatsoever but it certainly is the OPs.

    Cheers

:T I agree & reckon this thread is a wind up myself.

If it is genuine however I'd suggest that despite your suppliers error you used the energy, could & should reasonably have been expected to realise the money was not going out of your account to pay for it & meanwhile enjoyed a holiday on the proceeds.

25% off is far more than I'd have offered you based upon what you've posted if I were your supplier so I'd grab it & be grateful for it.

Alternatively you can fight it out in Court or try the Ombudsman. I'd be amazed if either felt you hard done by under this suggested resolution though

Over the years there must have been scores of posts from people who hadn't noticed(often for years) that nothing was being deducted from their bank accounts for gas/electricity/water - often in new build homes.

No doubt some could be genuine, but I suspect the vast majority have noticed and think they might 'get away with it'. I wish they would be up front and say so - because frankly the 'we never noticed' excuse wears a bit thin.

I suspect if they overpaid, they wouldn't be happy to only get back 75% of their overpayment!

Like the OP even when they get a 25% reduction worth hundreds of pounds, and a long interest free loan, it seems that they want more.

Possibly but my test is whether an OP gets back with answers to questions that posters have taken time to ask.

I do not know yet in this case but what % of OPs with problems ever have the courtesy to update the thread with an outcome for the benefit of others? Not many.
  • Ok everyone, people are being pretty rude here. Admitted I've been a little naive but suggestions of being cavalier etc are ridiculous. It's an easy oversight to make and actually do have a job to undertake each day. It appears that some people on here solely dedicate their lives to consulting their statements and cross referencing payments. To be honest shame on some of you for presenting such scorn for a mistake by a 'newbie'.

Im not intending to be rude here, but i have a job too but i still take time once a month to check that i am all upto date with bills etc.
Its not a hard job to do. Missing it once is an oversight but doing it consistantly is quite poor. Have you checked you have been paying all your other bills correctly?
