We are a family of 5..well 4.5 as running as a hotel for the eldest..the last South West water meter bill from April-June came in at £121.56. so about £60 a month so sounds about right to me if you dont aspire to the "don't flush" rule
  • We just moved in 2 months ago, and have been away for over 3 weeks so no water being used then.

Our first bill came to over £130 for 2 months! :0

They say previous metre readings were 957 and 2 months later 1021 = 64 cubic metres. That's 64 tonnes of water and we were only in the flat for about 5 weeks, a small flat with only 2 of us.

We pay 117.82p for water coming in and 59p for waste going out.

I know I should have checked the water meter myself when I first moved in but I still cant find it. I ask where it is and they say 1m to left of front door but it is not there or anywhere obvious. I have to find it and then not use water for a while to check if it goes up and see if there are any leaks.

If there is a leak, is it the water company or the landlords (we rent) responsibility to sort it out? We are in a block of flats.

They say we have used around 64 cubic metres of water, but we have a very small flat just myself and wife both working full time so not even home that much to use much water.

I can not afford £60 every month just for water, that is just stupid. What can I do.

The probability is that the initial meter reading was incorrect and you are paying for the previous tenant!

Any water leak after the meter is landlord responsibility, before meter its the Water Company.

You would notice a leak of that magnitude!!
  • I have the same problem. i was on the restart scheme paying £13.50 a week for a debt AND my water. I have now cleared my debt and they now want me to pay £24 a week! I live with 2 children in a 3 bedroom house. my supplier is South West Water. I am on benefits with a part time job and dont qualify for Watersure. I was better off in debt! HELP!!! (Please)

First off you need to make sure they are using correct meter readings so supply an up to date one and see if that changes the plan..if not then you can always cancel it and just pay your bill every 6 months and that way it means you can save the money in your bank.

  • Ive been told its from actual readings. Im not bothered if i pay DD or 6 monthly, i just think the amount is unfair! how can i pay £13.50 which was covering water and debt and now that debt is paid its £24 for just water?????
  • Have a look at your usage and see if it has increased.

South West Water charges are horrific! Nearly three times as much as other parts of UK.

If there are 3 of you in the house, the average consumption should be around 180 cubic metres a year(that is the UK average)

For 2012/13 the combined water/sewerage charge is £5.26* for a cubic metre plus £70 in standing charges.

So that would equate to approx £1,000 pa.

Obviously it could be lower if you used less water, and higher if you used more!!

If you are a few weeks behind with your payments since restart finished, £24 a week might be correct to reduce any debt to zero by April 2013. Obtain a bill and post details here and we can further advise.

    * a little less if you have claimed Surface water drainage relief.
