Definitely LCD over plasma (although LED if affordable). if you are buying a tv above 32", you should get full HD. I have a 32" and 42" LCD and you can't tell the difference in the 32" due to the smaller size, however I have seen 42" ones that are only HD ready and you can then see the difference.

Plasma is my choice. People will repeat pub trivia to back up the choice they made, and lots of advice can be misleading or out of date. Also salesmen have a habit of telling you that the TV they have in stock right now is the best one for some strange reason.
UncleZen, post #9, isn't reflecting a common problem with plasmas, I can only assume that he is very sensitive to flicker, or was looking at a poor quality, or very old screen, again, no details have been provided.
Advice has tended to be that you should get plasma for bigger screens and LCD for smaller. Even that's a bit out of date though as it's from when you couldn't really get big LCDs. And you definitely can't get small plasmas.
Full HD Ready or HD Ready is a bit irrelevant these days, like asking if your car should have a radio. For the size of TV your after, only old crap that shops are trying to get rid of WON'T be 1080 Full HD Ready. If budget allows you should probably also consider a TV with Freeview HD or Freesat HD built in.

Watch a camera panning across a football/rugby field on a plasma and observe the vertical white lines briefly turning to a prism i.e. red, blue, green, yellow - thats enough for me to not buy a plasma and buy an LCD panel.

I dont know what plasma you have been watching but my 50" LG doesnt do that.
