Vent about a very ignorant cashier in Morrisons

  • Same thing happened to me in Tesco a while back. I had a full trolly of groceries and the whole thing was put through during a conversation between two members of staff without an acknowledgement that I was even there.

I packed my groceries getting more and more cross. I paid and I walked away. As I was walking I thought "why should I put up with that service" so I went straight to customer services. I explained the problem and the CS staff member called a manager. I told her that I did not expect a conversation but that I did expect an "hello" at the start and a "that is £xxx", that I didn't want to hear about them going to xxx club this weekend and who they were going with and what they were planning to wear.

The asst manager asked to see my receipt to confirm the till number and said she would speak to the staff member. I left feeling much better. I realise that she would get a telling off but feel that she was not doing her job correctly so deserved it.

Until this last past year or so I would never have complained about anything but now I feel that I don't have to put up with crap service, cold food in restaurants etc. However, when complaining I always do it (I feel) pleasantly and do not go in with all guns blazing.

It's only by complaining/pointing out bad manners etc that things will improve.

Unfortunately poor customer service seems to be usual now.
Our Sainsburys now only ever seems to have a few tills open at any one time & are pushing people to use self checkouts. I don't like using them as I think that they're a sure way to justify cutting staff.
A few weeks ago I was queuing at one of the 2 open tills & had been for about 10 minutes, when a checkout op rounded up a couple of people who were making their way to the till area & opened the till next to me for them.
I was mighty peeved as the family in front of me had just started to put up the start of two overflowing trolleys.
The next time I shopped I decided that I'd use the self scan, there was something wrong with it & after scanning each thing I had to call for assistance. The lad was nice but wandered off to chat with his mates each time, I ended up putting half through & leaving the stuff. (I'm not very good at going out & have panic attacks).
Certainly for me Sainsburys have the worse till staff of the supermarkets around me. I find the shop floor staff really helpful though.

All depends on your local stores really, but I haven't had bad service at my local Sainsburys.

I use to work on checkouts at Asda, and staff are trained to always acknowledge the customer and strike up a conversation with them. I never always struck up a conversation with them, especially around Christmas/Easter/Bank Holidays, but I at least acknowledged them, usually apologised for the wait they had then speedily put their shopping through, and helped them pack if they were struggling to keep up!

There's no need for bad customer service on tills. I can remember being tired/ill/bored on tills, but I at least looked at the customer and spoke to them at some point during the transaction!

While I was in Morrisons on Sunday while stood waiting for my receipt to be printed the young lad serving me was using his phone underneath the counter i'm not even sure whether he even thought about how bad it looked or whether he just didn't care.

I work in a supermarket and we are only allowed on us:
    . Locker key
    . Pen
    . Self scan ID
. Bottle of water - with a sports cap on
    . Cutter
    . A few throat sweets
. Medication that needs to be carried on you such as inhaler

Every other day, we get searched by the security officer and a TL or Dept Manager. If we have anything else that isn't on the list, it gets noted. If a colleague gets caught 3 times in a row, then they get an informal chat with the DM. If they get caught again - they get an investigation/disciplinary.

If you have the receipt, the cashier's ID number that they sign onto the tills is there and you can complain that this colleague was messing about on his phone.

I have phoned up and complained about some numpty cashiers at Tesco over the phone. I said I couldn't remember their name but I have my receipt and their sign on is 649.

In my store, the basket till is next to one of the groups of self scans. About once or twice a day, on average, the colleague on the self scan gets a customer that has a really tatty note, a note that has cellotape on it or a coin that gets rejected for unknown reasons - they ask the cashier on the basket till to swap it, if the customer on self scan doesn't have another coin or note to try. I do apologise to the customer I am about to serve about this.

Interesting reading all your responses, thank you!

I had thought of complaining... I have never complained about anything before - normally let things go, but this incident on Sunday really annoyed me!!

Normally, I am a Sainsburys shopper, although have recently started visiting Tescos and have never encountered such rudeness in either of these stores!

It's not even as though the cashier that served me was of student age ... she was early to mid 50's!!

These people are the forefront of any shop/supermarket (no matter how big the business is) - if I was the owner of such, then I would be pretty peeved that an employee of mine was giving such a bad impression on the business!
  • if you think the behaviour is rude you have two options
    a) shop somewhere else, that witch thatcher robbed you of any other power than that of a consumer, wield it (or in fact realise that you shop there because of convenience so put up with it and shut up)
    b) complain to customer service - I bet morrisons have a policy where they say good morning or whatever, and they obviously transgressed that policy so you fight the good fight and complain

getting angry about it however will only give you at best an ulcer and at worst an early heart attack

Yes the behaviour was extremely rude! I know what options I have - like my post was titled, it was a 'vent'... it seems like other people on this thread think that it is unacceptable too!

Just because the store was 'convenient' to my whereabouts on Sunday, does not mean that they are doing me a favour and this sort of treatment should be 'put up with'!

I am complaining to customer service. As someone else has mentioned - for some people (i.e. the elderly) the supermarket is the only place they are able to get out of the house and have human contact, so why should they have to put up with that sort of treatment? Would you give them the same advice: "Shut up and Put up?". yeah, actually, I think you probably would!

Oh, and thanks for the concerns about my health - although I am not likely to get myself into such a state over this that it will cause either of those things (and believe me, I've seen both at first hand!).
