    Its difficult isnt it?
I desperately want a baby and probably would have quite happily gone ahead thinking I could figure out the debt afterwards. Luckily DH is a bit more sensible and we compromised on the cc rather than the whole debt.
I feel a lot better about it all now and this really is the biggest motivation I could have!!

Its situations like these that makes me really realise the extent to which debt rules my life!!

I have a friend who was career minded. Started trying for a baby when he and his wife were 33. Four years on still no luck. Now can't get help on NHS because of age. In the meantime I had 3 kids. No career sense. However now I've just got a degree and am focussed on a career.

Now I'm not saying that everybody should go ahead and have kids if they are thousands of pounds in debt. However this shouldn't be the only consideration. Often children bring you closer together as a family. You get more responsible more quickly and you have lots of rewards (not financial) that you can't imagine - unless you are a mum or dad.

So if anybody here is thinking of putting off having a family due to debts - give a thought about your age too. Good luck in anycase!!!

  • the age matter is certainly a consideration. i am still pretty young- 24- but it feels like the right time for me and like you Stebiz i believe i can still have the career and stuff after the kids. I have a good degree and although not the perfect job go with it believe it will still be relevant after ive done the kiddy thing.

Nattybone- would love to get to the stage of using a whole salary to wipe debt- if DH gets promotion and i get better paid job may be possible...if if if...

Yay, a buy-a-baby buddy, im in the same boat as you. We only have a small amount of debt, which we were fully aware of when we amassed it (recently got married/bought a house/honeymooned so we only have about £3k and most of that went towards the deposit on the house and we can easily repay it as its a 0% interest overdraft on OH's account.

We want to turn out debt in to a credit, then we will TTC (try to conceive)

So we are on the "buy a baby roundabout" turning our red in to BLACK!

    Good luck!!
  • Right now onto my goals for this week to make lovely money
    1. Put wedding dress on ebay (any advice on doing this successfully would be appreciated.
    2. Put old stuff 'to sell' notice board
    3. Cash in all change in spare change jar-(does anyone else find it slightly embarrassing entering the bank with a sack full of coppers!!)
    4. Get OH to get mobile money back (should be £60)

All proceeds from these things will go straight off the crredit card!!

BTW- Last night we did the ceremonial cutting of the evil credit cards- felt good.

well done on posting your SOA :T i'm sure there will be lots of helpful advice etc to follow. I notice there is nothing on there for clothes/shoes, birthday and christmas pressies etc and your petrol bill is HUGE! Do you have a job that involves driving long distances or something? Would it be possible to buy a diesel car instead of a petrol one?

I did the Uni thing too c-n but have always known that personally, having babies was a far greater priority than having a career. I have quite a well paying job at the moment which is in no way career oriented but a means to an end - clearing my debt.

I am 28 later this year and would def like to be debt free and someway on the way to motherhood by the time i'm 30. I have had a ticking clock feeling since I was about 22, especially as I have a small medical condition that might affect my chances of having a baby & the longer I leave it the more trouble I may have.

My biggest obstacle now (other than my debt) is that my OH is 4 years younger ;) and although he has always known & accepted that having babies is a priority for me is in no hurry himself. Ideally he'd like to be 30 I think... but I would find it extremely difficult to wait that long. I think he is quite relieved that I have had my LBM and that there is now no way i'd have babies now without clearing my debts first. He has been given a couple of years breathing space :rotfl:

good luck with achieving your goals this week btw! every penny helps :D

I need to sell my bridesmaid dress (cant bear to part with wedding dress quite yet) so let me know how you get on please!!!

Size 24 wedding dress bought for a size 28 bridesmaid (yeah go figure) that didnt turn up to the wedding. *angry*
  • Clothes and shoes!!!- What are they???? We had everyone give us clothes for Christmas so we should be kitted out for a good 6 months if not the year- maybe will budget £10 just in case as OH gets through so many shirts and socks.- will add that into SOA.

Yes I know petrol is crazy. I walk everywhere but OH has a long commute and perhaps even spends more than that- should only be short term (6 months) though as expecting a company car. Pretty efficient car just an old fiesta.

Presents- I tend to make all my pressies-though even this has costs involved-will add £10 to SOA.

Will suggest tonight that we both keep paper spending diaries to see where are money is really going.

I figure I might as well sell it now while its still considered fashionable- before people consider buying it as a Miss Havisham costume!!

Trying not to be sentimental about it- will probably cry when it goes though.

  • Hey Ms. Noodle! I am 26 years old and already have one child, who will be 2 in March but I am really desperate to have another. My husband and I have decided to clear our credit card (£3000) and then start trying.

So I am in a similar position to you really, except I already have my son.

It's really acted as an incentive and now every spare penny is going on that credit card!!!!

My god I am so broody!

I'm off to put holes in the condoms...:D
