Alan_M wrote:It's a shame, there are a lot of misconceptions about how and where we can trade and how we can run our businesses.
And what seems like a good deal (employing a foreign workforce) can come back and bite you on the backside without you realising - in your taxes paying for thier benefits, healthcare etc, in the damage is does to the economy, but mostly the misconception the British companies are somehow trying to screw people in this country, when all most of them want to do is run a business, employ decent people and make a profit.
Profit is a four letter word in the UK, sooner or later people will realise this instead of falling over themselves to get a bargain without questioning quality.
So true. The reason my family's business is struggling is because we've had to cut cut cut everything, until there's not much left. When you've got people coming into the country, buying a van, running on red diesel, not properly insured for courier work or for goods in transit and they're charging half what you are, your customers are going to use them, because, just like Alan says, everyone is obsessed with getting a bargain. I have to say, the biggest companies are the worst - they will quibble over a fiver despite the fact their after-tax profit could buy our company a million times over.
Also, tell me why businesses have to pay such extortionate business rates, which doesn't even include having your bins emptied! A lot of people don't realise this, or the fact that we have to have no less than 5 different insurances, which you have to pay extra because of the nature of our work - and we're not entitled to 'no claims bonus' even though we have hardly ever claimed on any of our insurances. If you emply people, you also have to pay 1% in NI to the government on behalf of each employee, just for the priviledge of employing them - a nice thankyou for keeping people out of the dole queue don't you think?
It seems like as soon as you mention the word 'business' it's a green light for a premium to whacked on (even things like broadband connection -the cheapest business package is £28 a month!) because 'you're surely making a mint' - no, we most certainly are not. I haven't had a pay rise for 3 years, my parent's wages have dropped so much they're having to sell their house to pay off business debt.
Sorry for the rant peeps, and perhaps this is the wrong forum for this kind of thing, but I think people should know about the state of small business in this country - the powers that be need to give us a break instead of tightning the noose!0 -
I'm having a problem with business rates at the moment, they are astronomical compared to what they were, because they are linked to rents, which have gone through the roof.
The new building I'm moving to will cost me £40,000 a year to run and I'm only a small business, nearly half of that is punitive charges such as rates, something I'm required to pay every year for nothing, then I pay corporation tax, income tax, I also generate VAT for the government, no wonder so many industrial estates are empty and so many businesses going to the wall.
You feel as though you're being fined for wanted to run a business, I generate more in tax each month for the government than the average annual salary, and after all that is paid there isn't a whole lot left to pay myself. Sometimes you wonder why you bother.0 -
