I always intended to let them collect, as I don't want to ruin my 100% feedback. I'm also happy to risk a scam on an £11.60 item

Just was a bit narked by the message and the assumption that people can just 'collect.' There was no 'free local pick up' offered.

if you are happy to offer collection then you should add it to your listing
those local may bid higher as they have no postage costs
which in turn can get the bidding going and a higher end bid for you

Some people don't express themselves too well in writing - other times body language being absent makes it difficult for people to put across what they genuinely mean.

The best thing to do is to detach yourself from it as much as possible - even if someone is upset about something then they are not trying to be personal, it's just that you either have their money or there is an issue that needs resolving. Cultivating emotional disengagement helps you be a better seller because it helps you not respond to things with something you'll later regret saying.

If you're happy to allow them to collect suggest they bring cash as it easier for them at the time (DON'T insinuate they are a scammer if they want to pay by Paypal; for that amount I wouldn't bother but in general the more expensive the item, the more likely I am to want to put it on some sort of card so I don't have to carry huge amounts of cash with me. That is a surefire way to get a neg, as things stand). If it's an odd amount make sure you have some change on you. Make sure it's a practical time that suits both of you and give them the opportunity to inspect the item - in fact, make them inspect it before they take it away, then you have a reasonable chance that they will be happy or spot any flaws with the item before they get them home. Do everything in your power to make the sale go through smoothly - remember, they're paying you, so you need to earn the cash (as with any other sale, really).

Good luck and let us know if you have any more issues.

  • If you tell them they are going to have to pay cash on collection it should be fine, although put in you message that they should have asked about collection before bidding as some sellers aren't as nice as you are! :)

I didn't want to offer collection on the item, I don't like having 'strangers' in my home. My OH and I work opposite shifts due to the children and I work different hours every week so collection is not particularly convenient.

Also I tend to do a batch every six months so if I was waiting in for 20 different people to collect it is a lot more hassle than going to the Post office. I have also been a victim of the paypal scam -that was on a fairly expensive pram. Also people do not come when they say they will. Last one was an hour and a half late and woke both my children.

However, in this case we have decided to allow collection. ~I'll let you know how I get on.

I messaged the buyer today explaining that collection isn't particularly convenient for me and that is why I do not offer it on my listings - however in this case I will make an exception but can only offer collection between x time and y time - if this isn't convenient I will gladly post.

Anyway buyer has agreed, so will see how it goes. I won't be here on the day that she has chosen as I'm working but OH will be.

and on the flip side; why would somebody expect an item to be posted when they're local I'll quite often filter by distance so i can collect instead of having to pay postage and unless it specifically says 'no collections' in the description, i'll expect to be able to collect it. If somebody doesn't offer collections then i'd expect to see it mentioned rather than just not an option listed in an area i don't look in.

I don't mention that I don't take Euros or conch beads in payment, but I don't take them. I don't mind people asking if they can collect, but they should not bid and only then ask if it is that important to them as I reserve the right to say no.

I would never expect to be able to collect, unless stated in the listing. I always ask prior to bidding to see whether I can or not.

you can add local collect to the postal options
so if a seller doesn't select that, wouldn't you take that as it not being offered?
