Need a new car but which model???

We need to upgrade our car and we're looking at a few options, we need something with AWD or 4WD due to being out in the sticks and we've had really bad winters for the last few years and also the roads aren't the best where we are.
Looking at:
Hyundai Santa Fe
Hyundai ix34 AWD
Kia Sportage AWD
Skoda Yeti 4WD

Rang around and its the same story, for the ix35 and Yeti we probably wouldn't be getting it till the new year due to long waiting lists, which would probably be no good as the snow normally hits around Nov/Dec.

We have been told the Santa Fe and the Sportage would be easier to get hold off most probably by Oct/Nov. We're looking at these due to the amount of baby stuff we need and boot space we need.

Not really looking at any other models tbh, but if anyone has any other options the please say, as long as its not the Peugeot 3008 ( wll never buy French again ).

Have you considered a second set of wheels for your current car with proper winter tyres on them?
Unless you're actually 'off road', a front wheel drive car with proper winter tyres will outperform the '4x4's you mention on year round tyres. It could be a lower cost option (that said, setting fire to money is a lower cost option than buying a new car) than replacing the whole car. It would also allow you to keep a car thet is otherwise suitable, and avoids higher running costs associated with running a 4x4 year round.
Failing that, how about something like a non turbo subaru on 4 winter tyres for those two weeks when it really does snow. You could set yourself up with one (a forester for example) for less than £2k and have it as a second car.

That said, Hyundais are offering killer warrantys which should keep unexpected costs to a minimum!
  • Have a Juke which had winter tyres and it was superb last winter, however its far too small for our new family thats why we want to upgrade to maybe something AWD/4WD so we don't have to mess around with winter tyres as we'll be doing a lot of camping trips etc as well...

Hi I just bought a vauxhall antara 2.2l diesel exclusive AWD for £16500 from Arnold Clark Linwood. That's £6,000 off the list price. Lifetime warranty for first owner. I tried to get an ix35 but i refused to wait 6 months, would be surprised if you can get the diesel sportage any quicker as the problem is Hyundai / Kia can't make enough 2l diesel engines to satisfy demand. A new factory is being built in Slovenia? to satisfy demand, but not soon enough. Worth a look.

skoda yeti, lovely car. very capable. would be my choice out of the 4
  • Yeah if i could find a 4WD new Skoda Yeti before Nov i would snap it up, Kia salesman says he could lay his hands on 3 or 4 2.0l Diesel AWD's tomorrow and they would deffo have one before middle of Oct?

    Why go new?

Are you bothered about running costs?

Another in the Skoda camp is the Octavia estate in 4x4 or Scout

    massive boot
  • i'd take a ex demo or pre reg model tbh, just said new as the second hand prices are not far away from new as they stand now...
octavia scout estate looks good tbh...

Kia Sportage is built in same factory as the ix35.

But to be honest I'd look at stuff like Octavia 4x4 or perhaps Audi A6 Allroad...

A new Skoda Octavia 4X4 or scout believe it or not has at least 6 months waiting list.
What Car recently had them top of the list for waiting times.
I test drove the 2.2 santa fe, the 2.0 ix35 and the 2.0 sportage and obviously the 2.2 antara. My preference would have been the ix35 then the sportage, but I was told Hyundai and Kia weren't taking orders for the 2l diesels until the new year and was told don't bother asking for a discount as they can sell as many as they can get a hold of. I couldn't find a local skoda dealer with a diesel yeti or octavia 4X4 to even look at in the flesh never mind test drive. So choice was down to santa fe or antara. Chose antara as it was the biggest discount. You could try broadspeed as they might be able to source a canceled order. Good luck in your search, I love the test driving and the haggling.
  • Small, light cars with winter tires are better on snow than most 4WDs.

If you want to go 4WD get used not new.
