Fruit leathers

Options
Having posted previously about the joys of fruit leathers I thought I would update, I read a quicker way of doing them in in BBC gardening mag, basically to every four cups of fruit you need one cup of water. Put chopped fruit and water on to simmer til soft then pass through a sieve or mouli, add a table spoon of honey or to taste, stir well then place on baking sheet lined with baking paper, level out and place in oven on low, in my fan oven is is 50, with oven door slightly ajar, I used a wooden spoon handle to keep it slightly ajar! I left it for six hours and it was perfect, I did raspberries and strawbs that needed using . . . . Delish! Hope that makes sense! :j

The earlier post was in a thread about plums and you can see it here:- Fruit leathers, I use Pam the Jam recipe (HFW...

So are there any fruits that would be better done by one method in preference to the other?

Thanks Squeaky. I don't think it would matter which fruit you used, the recipe is similar, it is just half the time this way. I shall try with blackberries tomorrow hopefully!

How long do they keep and how do you store them? This is a new concept to me so, sorry if questions seem daft!

I made these last year after picking my weight in blackberries!! I used apples with the blackberries and they turned out brill. After they were cooked/dried I cut them in to inch wide strips then rolled them up into little swiss roll type things and stored them in a tupperware container.

Hi Alex21, you just wrap them in clean baking paper, like a cracker, and then store in a dark place. I keep mine in a tin :-)

    Hello experts :D

For plums and nectarines, would I need to peel them or blitz them up with a stick blender?

Will any mix of fruit work? Anything that doesn't work?

I've got no baking parchment in, would tin foil do?

Sorry for all the Qs but I just got a load of fruit from the market and would love to try fruit leathers for my kiddies :D

Oh... and how thick should you spread the mixture on the baking sheet?

    Cheers :D
