maybe not the latest, swankiest, smartphone, but has what i need..

local fones4u are offering a 24 month (minimum) contract, 'matched' to my requirements', mainly texts, email, twitter..

£20.50 inc vat per month- on vodaone.
300 call minutes
'unlimited texts
250mb browsing.. to me that seems poor, but the staff assured me that was generous?

Now, if i sign up today (only 3 left, blah blah..) they would give 1st month free..

checing in the vodafone shop opposite, same tariff, but they seemed more keen, and offered TWO months free.. (no extra deals at present, if a vodafone) payg customer..
..
are there any better / cheaper deals about? or cashback?

checking their sites taking ages.. at 1st looks, it seems to be dearer online..

250MB of browsing is NOT generous.
Seems like a very poor deal especially in terms of the data allowance.
    do not take it

Go to CPW. They were selling the Apollo for £50 plus £10 top up. The top up on 3 gives all you can eat data plus enough voice and texts.

Will work out cheaper - and it's unlocked.

If you go to Quidco they are doing an offer for the Samsung Galaxy Ace. Free phone £10.21 per month with 600 mins, 500 texts and flexible booster which can be used for internet. Also £40 cash back. With T mobile. Think it expires in 4 days.
