Surely it is not the train booking system that restricts use of a F&F railcard but the train operators themselves.

As somebody has said Virgin, EastCoast, RedSpottedHanky etc. all use the same underlying system to select and book tickets. It is just the brand name of the website that is different.

I have read that Virgin the train operator is restricting discounted fares - indeed they are going to restrict advance purchase fares on Friday afternoons and Sundays.

I would have thought that would be reflected on the Virgin train booking website if they all use the same system.

Unless, as the previous poster indicates, booking a Virgin train with the Virgin website actually does provide a better fare than RHS etc.

Very confusing but I suppose Virgin could argue using their website for their trains provides better discounts.

I've got a return ticket from Doncaster to Kings Cross for October half term week no probs?. I have booked with East Coast trains. You have to use it off peak.

Best is to play around with it.

    * Try booking singles?
    * altering your departing station?, sometimes York to London is cheaper than Doncaster to London, doesnt matter as you get on at Doncaster and your seat is reserved.
    * tickets are more expensive Sheffield to London, its easier to get the local train to doncaster and travel than pay Sheffield prices.
    * try to travel after 9am if possible as its off peak

When are wanting to go in October? sometimes if you book a good 8 weeks in advance you can get really good deals and RSH does show that. My tickets are still available on the website and I have no problem with booking with a family and friends railcard?

Yes, RSH is a 3rd party booking agent if you like. They book seats on the train operaters behalf. Therefore they are given information by said operators as to what to allow. If you can book tickets directly with the operators you certainly should be able to book the same price ticket (without special offers) on RSH. The only difference being that RSH claim to be cheaper than operators websites to gain custom.

I know this to be true as I have double checked with East Coast website and RSH was a little cheaper for the same ticket, plus I used the £10 off so it was a steal.

I also booked tickets via Scotrail and checked RSH both the prices, and train times was the same......and it accepted my Family and friends card.

Lots of journeys booked through them don't allow a F&F railcard. Some won't let you have an off peak ticket just an advance and lots of them are more expensive than Virgin. To do Brum to London return for me and one child saved £2 using RSH and the £10 credit but only if I could guarantee which train I'd catch. Going with Virgin I would be able to use any off peak train. If you don't get the credit this time don't think you missed out too much - unless there are loads of journeys that are better deals than what I've looked at.

they most definately DO allow friends and family railcard discount, i just used them for mine yesterday!

Just registered another dozen or so accounts. Thanks OP![/QUOTE

Why do some people feel the need to do this?

I pay over £1200 a year in train fares. Combining this with the other offer means I have saved £240 (20%). I could have been REALLY greedy and registered enough accounts to make my train travel free for a year, but I didn't. I'm happy enough with my discounts, I don't care if I'm judged online, the savings are in my pocket rather than commercial transport companies who, IMO, have been ripping me off for years (last time I got a seat on a train was Dec 2010!).

I've had the email saying my evoucher is ready, but when I look at the account it says 'remaining balance: £5'. Not sure why I only have £5 not £10? Anyone else had this?

I usually book via east coast web site, so
i tried a comparison for 2 journeys on east coast route. the EC web site was cheaper as it deducted 10% off their lowest fair , that said had i gone through RSH with the £10 off would have been less as the fare was less than £100, it accepted and calculated both FF and under 25 rail cards for the respective passedgers on both

This was for a journey fully on east coast trains , on a non east coast service fares were comparable
