Can I just say folks that as other posters have said that it is cheaper for the fire service to offer this than to put out your burning house - but the smoke detectors are particularly aimed at the elderly (who can't escape a burning building as quickly) and those on lower incomes who are less able to afford them or the new toasters, deep fat friers, electric blankets etc and the fire safety check is invaluable - it's not really about money saving for the rest of us - more about life saving! However get the fire safety check - it's excellent but if you can afford the other things please buy them and have that warm glow that someone else who can't afford them is getting something they really need and that could save their life
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!

Is there a local 'CO Brigade' which will install a carbon monoxide alarm free of charge for me?

Dont know about Carbon monoxide detectors, we were not offered one. However they also save lives so if you dont have one worth the few quid that they cost.
I saw a programme on TV about these detectors and they were saying dont buy the ones that show a black mark if theres a problem, they say buy the ones that actually have an alarm because if you dont look at the one with a black mark then how you gonna know theres a problem.....which yeah when you think about it they are right
(I used to have one of the ones that dont have an alarm.....now i have a proper one).
  • Can take up to three weeks but they'll come and fit them for you - they even came in a full-size fire engine.
If like my mum your over 70 and had no alarms you go on a priority list was done in 3 days.
    Thanks to whoever posted first.
  • My ex is a fireman, he came round and fitted them for me tonight, any excuse to see his son I daresay but its a shame I had to ask him to . He is a twotiming rat, (hence, ex) but I thought that was at least one small kind gesture seeing as its part of his job anyway. xx might just save my son and I's lives, you never can be too safe...they come with 5 year batteries too xx
This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. (SHAKESPEARE, Hamlet, 1600) :kisses2:

  • West Yorkshire too. Free smoke detectors, free deep fat fryers to the over 60's if they use an open chip pan and free electric blankets, again for the over 60's, if their blanket is over 10 years old. 0800 587 4536
