Typical, just looked on Cornwall County Council's website and the Fire Safety bit has no mention of free smoke alarms, just a free advice line. That is so annoying as my alarm went mad and died just before Christams and i haven't replaced it yet.

Oh dear, for less than the price of a packet of fags or bottle of cheap plonk you were willing to risk not having a smoke alarm over Christmas and New Year when surely they are the most risky times, shame on you!!

They take a look round and see how many you need, so if your property needs 2 they give you 2 etc.
Yes they also fit them, all you do is call them and see if they run the scheme in your area.

Turbo Gran I do see what you are saying but the majority of us think "It will never happen to us"
Bryony, do phone up and double check though, its wort a 10p phone call innit :)
  • Devon Fire and Rescue Service also provide this service. We will conduct a free Home Safety Visit and provide advice and guidance on any hazards or unsafe practices that we see within the home. Firefighters may also provide and fit a free smoke alarm, if required, within the home. These alarms will last for approximately 10 years.

The firefighters will also help you and your family to develop an escape plan so that you are able to exit your property safely in the unlikely event of a fire occurring.

If you live in Devon and would like to arrange a Home Safety Visit, please call our Freephone number 0800 7311 822.

Everyone should have at least one. A family near us this Christmas lost everything because of dodgy xmas lights and they said on tv they were very cautious. Dont take risks if you cant get them for free, please buy some, you can get them for less than a fiver, that alarm could one day save your life.

I had the fire brigade round and they fitted 3 new smoke alarms which was fantastic (I'd signed up for a bit about 6 weeks earlier outisde Tesco) but the icing on the cake was they came in a fire engine and my two boys got to go and sit in it and put the siren on too.
  • Highland and Islands Fire and Rescue Service will come and carry out a free home fire safety visit and if you dont have smoke alarms they will fit 10 year ones. If you have an electric blankets that is over 10 years old or faulty then they can replace that as well for free. They also swap chip pans for deep fat fryers and block adaptors for in-line adaptors.
If in any doubt about fire safety in your home just contact the fire service and arrange a visit.

Please don't make assumptions, i spent Christmas and New Year at my brother's house so it was hardly the most risky time.
