This almost always stops the printer from printing pages with just one line on, and can be easily changes for each job to print two or more pages to one sheet, if you set it as the default printer, you get to choose if you want to change anything before printing

For HP Cartridges, these have originals, compatibles and for some HP Printers, a refill by post option

Anyone know of one with cheap ink, and wifi, with drivers for Android?
  • For ink prices and quality Kodak or Epson, both do individual colour cartridges too which can be more economical, and both have top quality inks. My old printer was a HP & ink was sooo expensive.

Really, Kodak has 5 inks in one cartridge, you never use all the inks at the same rate so most of the time you throw away most of the ink, don't believe the advertising hype, also the feedback we get on Kodak printers is not good, as for Epson, at the lower end of the market they are rubbish and very expensive to run, yes individual cartridges but they contain very little ink, are very thirsty machines and complain bitterly if you use non orignal cartridges.

Best machine in my opinion is either:
Canon MG5150 or MG5250 (WiFi version) with these machines you get both top and bottom paper feed, full capacity individual cartridges which can be refilled and chip reset, the cartridges hold a lot more in than the Kodak, Epson, HP or Lexmark machines and they are decent quality printers, leagues ahead of the other offerings, also with the Canon machines, should the print head clogg you can lift it out and soak it in Di-ionised water, none of the other machine offer an accesable print head meaning you either have to keep running the cleaning cycles untill the blockage clears (each cycle uses roughly 20% of the cartridge), get an engineer out or bin the printer.

BTW I work in the industry.

  • I've been looking too for my son.

I have a cannon pixima 3000 (not available now) and compatible ink is cheap, good results and it doesn't use much.

I would recommend a printer that uses separate colour cartridges that can be repalced independently. Apparently some of the cheap epsons whilst having independent colour units won't print black if one is empty - see reviews.

The reviews also complain of high ink usage.

I have been lucking at Brother - they are not the cheapest to buy but compatible ink is well priced.

I am still to be convinced on the Kodak argument. May no doubt be cheaper against original ink of comparable printers but can you get compatible inks not just originals.

    Firstly: Pixma 3000 good choice.

Second: Epson = crap though to be fair most machines that have seperate print heads won't work if a cartridge is empty, this is to protect the printhead, continualy runing the machine with empty cartridges will burn the printhead out.

Third: Brother machines are ok, compatible cartridges are very cheap and hold lots or ink, usualy 20ml each colour and 30ml for black, down side of the macines are: cartridges load from the front and ink goes to the print head via tubes, this means sometimes you can get an airlock which is a !!!!!! to get rid of, also, printhead buried inside the machine, should it clogg it's pretty much a case of binning the machine, also these machines are not suitable if you are not going to use them all the time, swtching off and not using for 3-4 weeks is pretty much guarentted to cause a clogged up printhead.

Forth: Re Kodak, I'm glad someone gets it, they are not all they are cracked up to be. Yes you can get compatables and the cartridges can be refilled (you need to change the chip) however, they are still rubbish machines, sadly PC World seem to want to push them on insuspecting customers as the best thing since sliced bread.

  • I've actually gone the opposite way and ditched my printer altogether. I still use it's scanning function but have realised that I dont need to do a massive amount of printing and have found that when I do need to print photo's etc its a lot cheaper to print them at the selfserve kiosks in tesco/asda, etc, any other stuff ive just printed them adhoc at the library.

Exactly, but you just can't get that accross to some people, they buy a printer and on the box is a big glossy A4 photo coming out of the printer, they think they have a photo printer so must print all their own photos, they just won't listen when you tell them it's cheaper and better to use the machines in Boots, Tesco etc, then they complain that the cartridges don't last long.

A3 Plus sheets are around 45 pence, so with ink, a £1 at most to print.

These want £5 and £5:97 for almost the same size (18X12), and I have to get there, go back to collect them, pay the running costs of the vehicle used to get there and back, or order them online and wait for them

Seems easier to put a piece of paper in to a printer and press a button

I have an epsom stylus Photo P50 and use compatibles all the time and the quality is as good if not better than original cartridges and it only costs me £10 for 3 sets of ink + 3 blacks (21 cartridges) while 1 original costs £8 so the same would cost £168 in originals

You're taking about sizes bigger than the usual a4. Most of the posts in this thread are relating to standard A4 printers that are commonly used with desktop pc's. Printers that are used to print out 6x4 photos or forms downloaded from the internet.

You also refer to the inconvenience and cost to go to a supermarket. Most people at some point in the week would travel to a supermarket so it's hardly an inconvenience to get some of your prints done whilst doing your shopping.

The majority of people won't rush down with their sd cards to print out A3 photos will they?
