Sky HD

How can you tell if an HD channel is not broadcasting in HD. My TV seems to show everything in 1080i - is this perhaps because it may be upscaling?
By default, the HD box should be set to highlight HD programming on the EPG into a orange(ish) colour. The programme description (accessed by the 'i' or info button) should also include "HD" amongst the other features of the programme (such as "S" for subtitles, "DD" for Dolby Digital, "WS" for Widescreen etc.).
This is not always 100% accurate it should be said.
The HD box is capable of limited upscaling to 1080i and some televisions are also capable of upscaling. However, the quality of the HD boxes upscale isn't particularly good on most models of boxes and the quality of a television's upscale varies dramatically.0 -
It was talked about by the Sky bloke who came across to train us up in HD Installs back in 2006,but I can't see it being dropped until the majority of subscribers have the HD.
By which time the price will have been "adjusted" so that the HD subscription is buried in the "normal" price...................:cool:0 -
I'm having problems with my current sky box (not plus) which i have had about 4 years. Called sky who told me it would be £65 call out for and engineer to look at it. Instead of paying that i have agreed to have the sky hd and installation for free. Ok i will have to pay a monthly subscription of £10.25 for a year but at least i'm now gonna get sky+ and a new hd box. I had thought about getting this anyway so really instead of paying a one-off payment of £99 i can spread the payment over the year.0

I would be interested to see a list of the channels you can get in HD WITHOUT the HD subscription - I think a lot of people could save £10.25 per month knowing that they can still get BBC One HD, but lose Sky1 HD, as an example.
Also, the answer to the question 'Am I watching HD?'
Well, most HD channels are simulcasts (broadcasting the same thing at the same time) of a normal station. Channel4/Channel4HD is a good example. If they broadcast a modern film it'll be HD, and it should say so in the guide. This gets broadcast in 1080i, your box recieves it at 1080i, sends it to your Full HD TV at 1080i through an HDMI lead, and 1080 lines of information are put out by your TV screen, That's HD. If, however, you watch a repeat of Location Location Location from 2002 on Channel4HD, it will be upscaled to 1080i before broadcast, then follow the same path. This can still lead to some improvement. Old programmes can't suddenly become HD though.0 -

Well,you don't get ITV2,3 or 4 HD nor E4HD for a start but you get 5HD,Channel4 HD & BBC/BBC1HD.0
