Ours is kept in the downstairs toilet and door left slightly ajar. We dont let our cat stay out at night and she doesnt have a catflap as she doesnt have any road sense so like to keep an eye on her while shes out.
She only uses her litter tray at night.
Have never understood why anyone would want a cats litter tray in their kitchen...yucky.

Genuine question as I'm not a cat person and know very little about them, why do they need somewhere to go in the house? Is there a reason they can't be house-trained like dogs to do it outside or can they just not last very long?
I wouldn't like anything like that in my kitchen or bathroom but most cat owners seem to have some sort of litter tray somewhere.

a: to be a good neighbour...cat poo is not nice for gardeners and has healthrisks for people
b: to be a good cat owner. Often the first sign of ill health is changes in toilet habit...you should know what is normal for your cat and when normal isn't happening.

    :)

We live rurally, with no neighbours and barn cats who do not use the trays. Last winter one of the feral cats had to stay in, and to make things really easy for her she and the house/pet cats (2 of them) shared FIVE litter trays. One in the front hall, two on the landing above, two at the back of the house upstairs on a separate landing. Partly so she didn't have to share, partly so that where she went in the house she didn't have to go far. ATM we have two, one on the front landing, one on the back landing.

We're hoping to use the ''short'' end of the understairs area to make a self contained litter tray area, with its own little door for access to clean them and a ton and jerry style scaled up mouse hole for access to the (lidded) trays thet will be in there. We'll also keep one on the top landing, but a box like the ingenious one posted made out of a cabinet is the IDEAL solution IMO.

Our litter tray is upstairs next to our loft door. I would never have it in the Kitchen for hygiene reasons.

They don't necessarily, it depends on the cat. I have two and only one (the older one) uses the tray. For years I didn't have any, but one of them was being bullied by another cat outside, so she started going on the mat by the front door!

My cat Spook, who died a couple of years ago, never used a litter tray even when she was dying of a tumour. We put one down for her, but she would still go outside.

    Another bathroom litter tray here.

It used to be under the stairs but when the mutts arrived it had to be moved out of their way otherwise they figured it was a deli-tray for them and Demon Cat was none to happy having a ruddy great nose snuffling at him when he was trying to be dignified on the tray.

As the dogs couldn't get upstairs it was the only place to put it - didn't want it in my bedroom (for obvious reasons) and didn't want it in spare bedroom or landing (carpeted) so bathroom was best.
  • I also vote for the litter tray in the bathroom.

I could never understand how it could be in the kitchen where food is prepared and cooked and sometimes eaten! Have people seen (or smelt!) what comes out of that end of a cat

  • It was my parents house-their choice.

Thinking it over though, it was really the only place for it-woulnt want it in bedrooms or living rooms for obvious reasons, landings and hallways are too narrow, and bathroom is too small, so kitchen was actually the only room available.
Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!
