Because the chances of claiming on the phone insurance are far more higher?

Having said that, I never insure my mobile.

But the losses on your home contents are potentally far higher.
    Loss of smartphone-£300-400?
Loss of entire home contents due to fire/flood-£40,000-50,000?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I agreee to an extent, especially as the smartphone loss will be for a maximum of 2 years, when you get a new one free on a new contract.
have people become so reliant on their smart phones that they couldn't cope with just a basci phone until renewal?

As for home contents insurance cover, while i would normally advise that people should have this, its not always that serious to not have it.
For example, young person in a house share might only have £1k or so worth of possesions as the furniture etc is all landlord provided.

I had been living away from home for 10years, and only had contents insurance for the last 2, when i had built up enough stuff for it to be worth insuring, thankfully I had the insurance as the hosue was broken into a few months back.

One of my student houses wass broken into a while back now, and what did i lose - nothing, because i had nothing of value to thieves!

Wish I was with Ulsterbank but am sadly not.

Anyone else, or is there no other option beside shelling out £14 a month?

Check out your own bank - may be possibel to upgrade to something that does include mobile phone insurance, or open an ulsterbank account?

Do policies really cover "loss of smartphone" though, unless it is stolen and you go to the Police Station to report it etc? As usual with insurance, I expect they'd look for any reason not to pay you.

Taking the £14-a-month insurance figure quoted, if you stuck that money in a jar every month you'd have £504 after three years which would buy you a top end smartphone anyway!

Many do cover loss of a phone regardless of it being smart or not.

You are right. Some cheekily require crime reference number for a lost phone that the police rightfully refuse to give.

Higher loss, but far smaller probability.

And you need a very serious flood to lose the entire content. And you'll pay through the nose to insure it in a high flood risk area.

It's always a balance between the value, probability and cost. I can replace my content without any insurance. I pay for the content insurance only because it is very cheap with the compulsory house insurance. When I owe my house outright I'll think twice before paying for the insurance, let alone the content insurance.
  • Do not used protect your bubble I am a customer of theirs and lets say I have been messed around royally and I don't appear to be the only one. Had my phone stolen and they said I didn't take neccasary precautions although they state this means not leaving it unnattented which I had not. 3 months down the line their still taking payments and I'm having to wait for my complaint to be dealt with and still no phone, can't cancel the payments because I can't cancel my policy until the claim is sorted. Which is great but if they still refuse my claim I then have to go about trying to get them to refund my payments for the year which have been useless :(
