I may be posting this in the wrong bit of the forum but any help would be good:
I bought a second hand engine from a dealer for my rover, the ad said the engine had been tested and was garunteed for 3 months, my mechanic has fitted the engine this week at a cost to me of just over 300 pounds, when he has tried to start the engine it will not go, he says the engine is locked and is no good. the firm I bought the engine from have basically said tough nothing we can do, if you want a refund then you have to take the engine out (or pay to havew it done) then ship it to us at your own cost then we will send you a replacement which I would have to pay to have put in.
this cant be right can it? they have supplied me with a defective engine, do I have to pay all over again?
thanks
Gordon

So your mechanic didn't try the engine before he fitted it?0

no it was supplied as a fully garunteed and working engine why would he bench test it when the company supplying it said it works!!!!0

I have to ask what condition it was supplied in......... Did it have all its fluids? Was everything fitted to it or did all the components come from the previous engine?
We don't know here exactly what you've been sold.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

So he didn't fit a pup.;)0 -
the engine was supplied as a full block with all ancilliaries, no it didnt come with fluids that is impossible with an engine as you have to take all the hoses off when you take it out of the car, it was advertised as "fully tested and working with a 3 month guarantee" I have spoken to 3 different blokes at the place that supplied it all saying it wasw working and has my mechanic fitted it right , they have rung his workshop and quizzed him, he is adamant it is fitted as per spec and I have no reason to be disabused of that notion.
so to sum up the condition it was supposed to be supplied in was a fully working gaurunteed engine with all ancilliaries (which it didnt but hey ho I can live with moving a starter motor over)0 -

He should have at least turned it over by hand before he fitted it. You appear to have done everything on the cheap and now have got your fingers burnt. Learn the lesson and use a decent mechanic next time.0 -

how do you come to that conclusion? 600 pounds for an engine, 300 pounds for a new clutch and over 350 pounds for a repuitable garage to install it all, plus making sure the engine was supplied for somewhere that offered it as tested and WORKING would not appear to be on the cheap, if you wish to ring my mechanic and tell him he isnt decent then by all means have his telephone number, or of course you could just go away and stop being unhelpful and somewhat abusive, I really dont mind either, as internet warriors such as yourself with that kind of ignorance and are one of the major depressing features of forums such as this.0 -
did your spanner man not even spin the crank over? it is a very simple test. and surely something that anyone would do as soon as a new engine appears.
its done by hand, and takes less than a minute.0 -

You spent £1250 for an engine and clutch for a Rover?:rotfl:
At that cost it would have made more sense to write the car off.
Please post the name and number of your spanner monkey and I'll gladly give him a ring and speak to him.0
