grown up child at home

I now have 4 grown up children living at home and no longer recieve any tax benefits, meaning that I am now having to try and support 6 adults on 1 persons wage. As far as can tell my options are starve or throw them onto the street (literally, as they have nowhere to go) - in an ideal world they would all drop into fulltime jobs and start to pay for themselves but I cant see that happening. one has a part time job and ccj's from being stupid with an overdraught whem he was 18, so has no spare cash. Can I officially make them lodgers in my home and charge them rent which they can claim housing benefit for or some such? or am I jst going to have to stop eating or make them homeless?

They cant claim HB to live in their parents home.
If you relied on tax credits to support the children, did you not think of what would happen when they stopped as it doesnt come out of the blue. If there are 4 adult children and a spouse all not working then they need to pull their fingers out and take anything going. There are jobs out there, particularly when you can be as flexible as you want re hours and no reason why any of them cant.0 -
Why is he only working part-time? Do CCJs preclude one from working full-time? And what are the other 3 doing?0

4 adult children need to be giving you money if they are not working then from their benefits.
The one with ccj's needs to sort that out and still try to give you someone, dont give them allowances because they have money problems, otherwise they will always be leaning on you for support and not learning a thing.
good luck not easy being tough on your kids0 -

You can't but there's nothing to stop you suggesting that they move out and find lodgings with someone else.
There's no reason for you to stop eating but if you stop feeding them, they'll have to sort themselves out pretty quickly.0 -
Surely your grown up children who are not working receive JSA or are they not actively seeking work? They need to be giving you something toward their keep. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

A family meeting and tell them straight that you cannot continue to support them without financial input from them.. so either they get jobs or pay you out of benefits , or find somewhere else to live..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Also, you say you're having to "support 6 adults on one wage". So as well as the kids, you presumably have a partner who is also bone idle?
They must at least be in receipt of JSA? I'm not suprised they've not left home, they're all onto a good thing by the sounds of it. Rent paid by you. Bills all paid by you. Fed by you. And whatever JSA/part-time wages they receive, is their's to keep as beer tokens? You mug.0 -
Why would they be homeless if they get out of the family home and into a shared house they will get Housing Benefit.
I'd be taking all the job seekers allowance from them as a payment for lodgings with all bills included. It's £53.45 per week.
If they want money for beer or anything else they can get a job. Why 4 adult children not working? Strange....:footie:

I fully agree that all should be paying their way (including the 6th person) using whatever resources they have and if that leaves them with no 'fun-money' then "welcome to the real world" for them!
One thing I would consider is that if they have all never worked it is a bit unfair on the younger ones if the elder ones have had a free ride for several more years. If you don't think you would be strong enough to get them all to tow the line immediately - give the eldest a 1 month warning of what you will be expecting to be paid in board and then all the others will be told that this will apply at that age too - then you will be treating all of them equally.0
