We pay £29 per month direct debit for electricity for a 3 bedroomed detached bungalow.

Yes, it is all year. We also have electric oven and hob, but we do use our slow cooker a lot, which saves electric. At the moment we are in credit, but this will probably be used up over the winter.

We are retired, so at home most of the time, but we try to be as OS as possible.

Our biggest spend is on oil for central heating:eek: Just wish we had gas in the village.

Wow I am really surprised how many people are paying £40-60 a month for both! What are we doing wrong I wonder.... hmmm boiler was new 3 years ago (although don't think landlord has had it serviced in the 18 months we have been here) - we have blinds and curtains, although going to safety pin some cheap fleece blankets inside soon and get some foil stuff for behind the radiators... hmmm trying not to use the tumble dryer as much, but easier said than done with this 'summer'! Although I am at home every day with the children, so tv etc on... prob do 2 loads of washing a day...

From your original post it looks like you are on a pre payment electric meter, which I believe is far more expensive than paying by direct debit. Why don't you change to direct debit.

I have never owned a tumble drier. I take advantage when the weather is fine. I always get my washing on the line by 9 am and if necessary put another load on. I have an airing cupboard, which helps to finish drying my washing in the winter. If you have one take advantage of it.

I don't think TV's cost a lot to run. We have 3 laptops, one of which is running 24/7. We also have 2 fridges and 2 freezers.

When the oven is on I always make sure it is full.

Go over to the Old Style board and you will find lots of advice.

With Scottish Power we pay £100pm duel fuel for a 3 bed semi. We only had loft insulation put in in february of this year so hopefully this will reduce gas consumption this autumn/winter. We cannot have cavity wall insulation put in though. Currently our account is £55 in credit. My direct debit is due to be reviewed on 1 February so I am expecting an increase up to £120-£130 after the recent price increases but I switched to a capped tariff up to June 2013.

£25 leccy and £35 gas. I started fresh with British Gas in May and now have a healthy credit of £105.98. This will go up again on 1 September when my next DD goes out. I live on my own in a 2 bed (but quite large victorian) terrace.

My heating hasn't been on since May so the only gas is for a shower, cooker and the pilot light.

thanks - sadly the landlord requires we stay on the meter - not sure why but as our rent is cheaper than others locally we don't want to push it! Sadly no airing cupboard and not really any space to dry stuff on airers/radiators etc although i am trying to have it on the airers as much as possible...

If you have your tv on all day (especially if by tv you mean tv, digi or sky box, dvd player etc) that could be £20 a month in electricity right there.

I suggest you invest in an electricity use monitor, it is a good tool for teaching just how much 'unnecessary' electricity you are using.
