How long before you moved your newborn into his/her own room on nighttime?

Eldest (now 10) went into her own room at 6 months - as the guidelines then
Second went into the same room as her sister at about 4 months
Third went into his own room at 5 months (but could see him if I left both doors open)
Fourth is 9 months and still in with us as he wakes frequently still, once he sleeps through he'll go into his brothers room0 -
Day One for me too. That was 20 years ago though. I had no idea and no guidelines, other than the Shirley's guide to puppy rearing, so took their advice and wrapped an old tick tock alarm clock in a blanket underneath the cot to mimick mothers heartbeat, daughter slept through the night from around 6 weeks (probably scared to move or make a noise as she thought there was a bomb under her bed

I think its entirely down to you! and how you feel. if you feel the baby should have his/her own room from the start and use a baby monitor, and dont mind getting up and going into the nursery for night-time feeds, then that is right for you! If however, you want the baby close, then by all means keep him/her in your room. In other words there is NO set rule (not in my mind anyway). plus not all babies are the same - some will seem to like thier own space while others want to be close to mum or dad! I would assess the babies (and your needs) and go from there!
New parents seem to want a 'rule book' - but babies make up their own rules! you do what you feel is best for both of you!
I hope my health visitor will be just like you when my twins arrive in Jan. Ive heard some of them can be so dippy but you speak loads of sense. May just come on here and ask you for advice if my health visitor belongs to the 'dippy brigade'

Health Visitors - Hmmmmm. Some are amazing and others drive you crazy!
I was keen on having the baby in with us for at least 6mo though in the end we moved the Gosling into his own room at 5.5mths as we were disturbing him and vice versa. We put the Moses basket into the cot to start with and he slept well. We took the basket away and had a few iffy nights and then he settled as he got used to the space of the cot.
You have to do read the baby and do what suits you and your baby. What works for one won't necessarily work for another and if you do move the baby into its own room and it doesn't work out you can always move the baby back in with you.** Proud to be dealing with my debts **LBM - Jan 2009 _pale_ : £24,802.21 :eek:February 2010 :silenced: : £18,078.47 (not including OD)July 2010

I moved DD when she was 12 months and wish I hadn't, it was too early.
The guidelines are a minimum of 6 months in your room because of the risk of cot death/SIDS.
When they are very tiny they need to be close to mum in order to regulate breathing, heartrate and temperature. If you Google 'kangaroo care' you will see how important being close to mum (and dad!) is for little babies.
For me, it just makes sense they'd need to be with you - when we lived in caves I doubt we put them in the cave next door! The guidelines are based on research, so I'd say keep them in with you till at least 6 months. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

My daughter was in with me til 8 months and my ex made me move her into her own room as the cotbed took up most of the room, but it nearly broke my heart the first couple of weeks, i hated it.
With my son he was in with me for a year cos i bf til he was 1 and i didnt want to disturb daughter going in to feed him as they shared a bedroom.
Do whatever works for you and your family. Xxx0 -
If I remember rightly think son was about 9 weeks old. We put his moses basket in his cot so he had tim he same surroundings and he was fine. I used to go in to feed him when he woke in the night. I slept much better then as I used to wake at every little sniffle, and I could hear him crying (he cried so much I think the whole street heard him!)0

Both ours went into their own room at about 5 mths, they'd been sleeping though for a while anyway, but they were starting to outgrow the moses basket and we would disturb them when we went to bed. Just do whatever feels right for you
