Replacement for Shuttle

Can anyone advise on a replacement for a Shuttle small format pc. It runs too slowly and has become very noisy. It's been checked for viruses/malware etc. It currently has only 2 x 512 mb of Ram and I know that I could put in 2 x 1gb sticks for about £50, but I'm reluctant to spend on it if its on its way out anyway. The person who built and supplied it (for over £750) 7 years ago wants £100 to look at it and advise.

It is used for general surfing and for work - wp, spreadsheets and for downloading and editing large maps (which I know use a lot of memory). It is not used for games, music, films etc.

I've got used to the cube shape and would find it difficult to find space for a standard tower. Is there any alternative? My googling has left me confused - it just seems as though the small format is much more expensive than standard. Or does anybody know better?

Many thanks.

Any half decent laptop maybe? Or if you are happy with your current monitor maybe a slimline Dell Inspiron 620, or a Zino.

You'll always pay a premium for a small form factor PC - they get sold in lower volumes, sometimes use laptop type disks which are more expensive per GB and if they are high performance need specialist cooling systems.

A quick google shopping search for "shuttle computer" shows there are still plenty of options but lots are barebones systems (usually just a mainboard and processor in a case and sometimes not even a processor) so be careful that you know exactly what you are buying - for instance Mini-ITX systems often use very low power processors.
  • I've got an ASRock ION 330 HT which I use as a media PC under our TV. I've had it for about 18 months and not had any problems with it. We have a couple where I work as well due to lack of space in some places and they do the job as work PC's too.

I think newer versions are available; the range is here: http://asrock.com/nettop/index.asp

The emachines er1401 from ebuyer is pretty quiet and cheap. Its not the fastest processor in the world, but it should cope with your suggested workloads okay. Down side is that the one on sale comes with a rubbish linux distro so you would need to get a seperate windows license and follow some guides to install it from USB as it doesn't have a CD drive. I use one as a HTPC behind my TV.

I don't really know what the noise is - a combination of fan and the bubbly noise I've aalways had with Shuttle - but much loudeer now. I don't hink it's dirt - I hoovered it out only a couple of weeks ago, but I'll give it another go.

You're still on Service Pack 2 - that means your XP needs some serious updating. Go to Windows update and enable automatic updates. Manually run a scan for essential updates before you do anthing else. Then get rid of those toolbars, run Malwarebytes, CCleaner. My favourite uninstalller is Revo Uninstaller - use it on the advanced mode. I'm sure that the others will add to this soon.

You've got eset and malwarebytes resident scanner running, having multiple layers of security doesn't help speed.

The best way of cleaning up a slow or badly infected machine is to backup all your data to an external drive, and do a factory restore using the factory restore partition (see manual or manufacturers website) or Windows disc. The alternative is to do it manually as follows (the list may look daunting, but should take less than an hour of effort (apart from virus scans)) :-

    __________________________________________________

Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

This is a general guide on cleaning up infections and speeding up pc's https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849

Making any changes to a PC setup always comes with a slight risk of something going wrong, the worse case scenario is an unbootable PC - ideally you should have got a backup of important data on dvd or external disk, and a disk image backup (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp) or windows disc/factory restore partition available before you start. In the unlikely event that anything does go wrong, post on another pc for advice.
    __________________________________________________

If you suspect an infection, here are some other virus scanners to try, let them fix anything found

    http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/
    http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro
    http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe

    ************************************************

Scanning with all the scanners above along with your resident scanner should remove most or all infections if there are any present on your machine, below is some specific (optional) advice based on your log which may help to improve speed and tidy things up.
    __________________________________________________

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe

Disable ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

Click the java icon in control panel, advanced, misc - untick java quick starter, and untick place icon in task bar

Take care. It's been a while since I tinkered with XP, but I remember all sorts of dodgy doings to defeat WGA by disreputable dealers. It's possible that you have an unlicensed copy of the OS installed - that might explain why the autoupdate has been switched off and you're sitting at SP2.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

  • It's a licensed copy and automatic updates are on, so I don't understand why SP2 hasn't been updated. I'm going to work my way through Closed's checklist this evening.
