  • We have an older version of what is now sold as the Acer Aspire X3910-H.

This is small compared to a traditional tower and we've been pleased with it for more than a year.

Having said that I fancy a Mac Mini....
  • I've been working away on Closed's checklist and think I have got as far as I can. It took forever to download SP3, but I finally got there. I can't get rid of ESET or Logmein because my employer insists on them.

When the machine boots, I get a message saying " You have used msconfig to make changes to the way Windows operates. The System Cofig Utility is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode. Choose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start up normally and undo the changes you made". I tried that and it really did undo all the changes I had made! So I changed them again, but what do I do now? At the moment I'm closing the message and continuing to work in selective startup mode.

I also get an error message from ESET saying that a number of updates are outstanding. When I try to download them, I get the following page from the Microsoft Knowledge Base: support.microsoft.com/kb/2497281 - basically saying that I can't access updates because I've not downloaded the latest Service Pack. But Automatic Updates are on and SP3 has been downloaded.

In XP, there doesn't seem to be any way to review the update history (as there is in Windows 7) - I'd like to know which updates have been downloaded, but can't find a way to do it.

It seems to be working more quickly and certainly no longer gives me time to go and make a cup of tea while it's booting! Should I invest in some more RAM?

    Thanks for all your help.

I'd reformat and reload Windows, update it and it'll be as good as it ever can be and probably much better than it is now..... don't forget to backup everything and also download any drivers from Shuttle's website for that machine such as graphics, network card et before wiping and reloading otherwise you may not be able to get back online to do updates. You can also download Service pack 3 and store that to disc or spare hard drive speeding up the reloading and reinstallation times.

XP with 1Gb ram should make for a half decent machine.

You can review Windows updates if you go to the windows update website and look at the 'review your updates' if I recall.

msconfig - tick don't show this message and ok - or download autoruns and use that instead.

update history is in control panel, add remove programs (tick show updates), or you could look at c:\windows\windowsupdate.log

This one doesn't need to be running all the time, just use it if you need it

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LogMeIn GUI] "C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeInSystray.exe"

macrium, I'd backup then disable the service or uninstall, as the service will be running all the time

there are still a few o4's that don't need to be running, adobe, google etc

You don't really need more ram, your peak commit is well below installed ram

eset problem - don't know - eset updates or windows updates? anymore detail you can post?

In internet explorer, click on tools, internet options, advanced, disable script debugging to stop this running
